It’s time to plan ladies night, and you are in charge of picking the spot. So many places, so little time. When I pose the, “where do you want to meet?” question, one request regularly dominates…sushi! It seems to be a consistent crowd pleaser among the ladies. I say most, because people either love sushi or hate it. For those who love it, it is versatile. Your gym-obsessed gal pals eat it, as it qualifies as “healthy.” Happy hour aficionado’s like it, provided there are beer, wine and drink specials. Your gluten and lactose intolerant friends can eat it, and there are fun drinks like Sake-Bombs when the girls need something a little stronger than beer. Plus, it provides some good, old-fashioned fun that is geared toward sharing. Perfect for ladies night right?
Lucky for you, there is a new sushi spot in Annapolis for your next outing with the girls. Just when Annapolitans thought the only worthy spots in downtown Annapolis were Joss and Tsunami, a new addition called Sakura Café (formerly Ego Sushi), recently made a strong debut. The cozy restaurant “rolls out” some creative and delicious sushi. And for those who wince at the thought of sushi, fear not! Sakura offers steak, seafood and American cuisine as well. A win-win! Case in point- I love sushi, but my mom hates it. Problem solved! She can order Hibachi or a burger and I can revel in sushi heaven.
The service is stellar and starts with warm, welcoming smiles from Jade and Anna (Sakura’s owners), whose personalities are friendly, accommodating and enthusiastic. Last time we held our girl’s night out at Sakura, we ordered a bottle of Soju, an alcoholic drink similar to Sake. Anna recommended we try it chilled and warm (evidently Americans prefer it chilled, but it is traditionally served warm). Anna returned with a chilled bottle and a carafe of heated Soju, so we could taste it both ways. It’s the little things that can really make a difference when it comes to customer service, and Sakura gets it. One of my friends recently discovered that Sakura delivers throughout downtown Annapolis and Eastport. Our late night hankerings for sushi no longer involve getting dressed up, putting on makeup and styling our hair! Eating sushi at home, in pajama’s (sans makeup), while watching American Idol…priceless. Sakura has since “catered” more than a few of our at-home girl’s nights.
In sum, the food is fantastic, the experience fun, and the service top-notch. While Sakura has created quite a following among locals, you and the girls can still get a table without a thirty-minute wait on most occasions. What’s not to love? Hint: Be sure to introduce yourself to Anna and Jade when you venture in, chances are you will be friends in no time!
