Matt 10:1 says. And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.
In Part 1, we saw that Jesus provided healing for us. He was beaten and put on the cross to die. When He did this for us, He didn’t just take sin with Him. He also took sickness and disease. He provided it for us and we have had access to God’s perfect healing power for almost 2,000 years. Any sickness or disease we have in our body right now was defeated by God when He was on the cross. He wants us healed, He wants us healthy. God does not say “Well, maybe I’ll heal you maybe I won’t” He already took care of it.
Then why isn’t everyone healed?
The key to answering this question lies in several verses, Matt 10:1 being one of them. Luke 10:19, Mark 16:17-18 and James 4:7 are a few others that also contain the answer to this question. Let’s compare a couple of them.
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Luke 10:19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
If we look at these three verses we can see they all have one theme. WE must DO something. Matt 10:1 says Jesus gave His disciples the power to cast out demons and heal all kinds of sickness and disease. The disciples were out there casting out sickness. They weren’t asking God to do it for them. James 4:7 says WE have to submit ourselves to God. WE have to resist the devil. Luke 10:19 again says God has given us the power to trample on the power of the enemy.
John 10:10 says The thief does not come except to steal, to kill and to destroy. I (Jesus)have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. Here we see that we have an enemy who wants to destroy us, who doesn’t want us to be healed. We also see that Jesus wants us to have life more abundantly. 1Pet 5:8 tells us to be vigilant (watchful, alert, guard against danger) because our adversary the devil is seeking those whom he can destroy.
We are victorious in Christ. Jesus wiped out sickness and disease on the cross. We already have it. We are on the winning side. BUT we have an enemy who likes to steal, kill and destroy. However, he can’t devour everyone. He can only devour those who let him in. If he could put non-operable tumors on everyone, he would, but according to 1 Pet 5:8 he has to SEEK whom he may destroy. He has to find someone who will let him destroy them.
We ask God to heal us and sit and wait and don’t do anything. Then when we’ve waited for a few minutes, we check to see if we are healed yet and if we aren’t we say “Well, God must not be listening to me. I must not be worthy.” Or “Well, I’m not healed, so God must not heal people anymore, healing must have passed away with the disciples.”
NO! We can’t sit back and simply wait for God to do something. He ALREADY did it! WE have to do something. WE have the authority and power. God gave us that authority and power to USE. If we tell Satan to leave, he has to leave! (James 4:7) If we don’t accept sickness, then sickness can’t stick around.
Part 3 will look closer at the authority we have.
