Isaiah 53:5 – But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him and by His stripes we are healed.
1 Pet 2:24 – who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness – by whose stripes you were healed.
The question a lot of Christians ask today is “Does God still heal?” Well, the answer is yes…and no. To explain, look at the verses above. Isaiah says for by His stripes we ARE healed. Peter says by whose stripes you WERE healed. With a basic understanding of the English language we can immediately see that Isaiah is speaking of healing in the present tense and Peter is speaking of it in the past tense.
The verse in Isaiah is a prophecy Isaiah gave about Jesus long before He was born and Peter is speaking about what he personally saw happen to Jesus while He was on the earth. Notice they both talk about the stripes Jesus took before He was crucified on the cross. This is important.
If you’ve seen the movie “The Passion of the Christ” then you’ve got an idea of what those stripes looked like. It was gruesome, gory and very, very painful. These verses say that by those very stripes we were and are healed.
We ARE healed. Not we’re going to be healed. We ARE healed. We know that when Jesus died on the cross He took all sin with Him, both past and present. Every sin we have ever committed or will ever commit, He took them on the cross and they are paid for. Wiped away and totally clean. Well guess what? So is sickness and disease. It’s done, it’s defeated. Everything from skinned knees to the most aggressive cancer was healed by God almost 2,000 years ago.
When Peter says “by His stripes we were healed” he isn’t saying we were only healed when Jesus was on the earth. That’s obviously not true because the disciples healed people after Jesus went back to heaven. It doesn’t say anywhere that healing passed away with the disciples. So… why do we see people praying for healing, yet not getting healed?
Consider what Matt 10:1 says. And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.
There are many verses that say much the same thing. Luke 10:19, Mark 16:17-18 and James 4:7 to name a few. Jesus gave US power and authority over unclean spirits, sickness and disease.
So the answer to the question “Does God still heal?” is no…
He took care of all sickness all at once when He took those stripes on His back. It’s taken care of, it’s finished. Isaiah 55:11 says God’s Word does not return to Him void, but accomplishes what it set out to do. Therefore, if Jesus took sickness and disease as well as sins on the cross with Him, then when He said “It is finished.” He meant, just that.
He wiped out sickness with those words and His words are still going like the Energizer bunny. So God isn’t providing individual healing anymore because He took care of it all. Once. Past sickness, present sickness, future sickness. It’s all been wiped out.
BUT, the answer is also yes. He wants everyone to experience perfect health, but He gave US the power and authority over sickness and disease and if we don’t exercise that power and authority we won’t experience perfect health.
Part 2 will go into this further.
