What is true love and true happiness? Can these terms ever be defined or achieved? I have been blessed to have loved my husband since the early age of fourteen. This is a love that is hard to find at such a young age and I am thankful to God that he has blessed me with someone who has loved me through it all.
How do we express the love that we feel deep within our soul? Being able to understand the true meaning of love or being in love is what we are searching for. We all want to be loved and we want to be able to express that love to others.
Being afraid of love and not being able to express these feeling that can shake a marriage and hinder relationships, and even hamper recovery. The song, ‘Yes Jesus loves me’, tells it all. Jesus loves each and every one of us, and how do we know this, ‘because the bible tells me so’.
God’s written word tells us that we are loved by the all mighty and it tells us that His love is everlasting, that Agape love, love that is unconditional. Can we all say that we have this type of love for another? God loves us through it all, our addictions, lies, lustful thoughts, and the things we do in the dark that no one knows about, God still loves us. “Yes Jesus Loves Me, for the bible tells me so”.
Hosea 3:1-5 is an example of God’s unending love. It tells us how God had Hosea to retrieve his wife even though she was addicted to adultery. It also states that, “For the Lord still loves Israel even though the people have turned to other gods, offering them choice gifts”.
Step 5 in recovery states that: We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
This may be hard to do because of the endless shame that we may feel. Thoughts of inadequacies may over power our minds and take hold of our soul. We may think that we are not worthy of anyone’s love especially, the love of God. Learning how to love ourselves is the first step in being able to love. We do this by asking the Lord to forgive us of our sins and then letting go of the things that have caused us to feel ashamed.
It is important that we accept and receive forgiveness in order to be successful in this step and to continue in the recovery process.
I have learned over time that regardless of what we do, God loves us, and it is up to us to understand and accept this in order to overcome addictions.
