Making the decision to travel on your own can be very liberating. Instead of just thinking about going on vacation by yourself, you’re actually going to do it. You’ll have complete control over what to see and do on your trip. But where should you go? As mentioned in an earlier article, a lot of cruises and hotels charge extra for singles and you’ll want to do your best to avoid that. A good place to start is to contact a travel agent and see what the most popular destinations are and if they have any packages for singles like you.
Erin Finley, president of Top Shelf Travel in Baldwin, NY, says she looks for all-inclusive resorts when booking trips for singles. The one she uses the most often is the Iberostar Paraiso del Mar in the Mayan Riviera. “The hotel doesn’t over-charge for a single,” says Erin, “and there is a lot to do where you would not feel uncomfortable traveling alone.” You can check out the resort’s web site at http://www.iberostar.com/EN/Riviera-Maya-hotels/Iberostar-Paraiso-del-Ma…
Mexico, Jamaica, and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic are great locations for singles where the price is reasonable. To get an idea of what’s available, go to your favorite search engine, type any of these three locations and add “for singles,” then hit search and see what comes up. There are many resorts that are often frequented by singles so you can mingle with the other guests and not feel so alone. There are a few resorts that specialize in vacations for couples, so be sure to stay away from those.
Escorted tours are a great way to see Europe while traveling with a group. For those of you who are not quite comfortable traveling on your own yet, this may be a better option for you. If you’d like to go on tours, but otherwise want to spend the rest of your trip on your own, Erin and her staff can put together flights, hotels, and tours so you won’t have to worry about how to get from one place to another. For your next solo trip (or your first), consider one of these locations and take a look at what all-inclusive resorts are popular with singles. Experience something different and meet new people along the way. Who says being single is boring?
