Norman, Oklahoma – Bob Barry Sr. has been the voice of the Oklahoma Sooners for 50 years but when the 2011 football season starts there will be a new voice behind the microphone for the Sooners – Toby Rowland. The University of Oklahoma made the announcement that Rowland will step into the role on Tuesday, March 22.
Toby Rowland is an Emmy award winning sports journalist who began working as a sideline reporter for the Oklahoma Sooners in 2009. Rowland graduated from Southern Nazarene University in 1995 and began working for News 9 in Oklahoma City in 1999. When he becomes the voice for the Sooners this year, he will take over both of Bob Barry’s roles for the football and basketball radio broadcasts.
Toby Rowland has won the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters award for ‘Best Sportscast’ in 2004, a Society of Professional Journalist award for ‘Best Sports Reporting’ in 2005, an Emmy nomination in 2000, an Emmy win for his 2005 Orange Bowl Blitz and another Emmy win for his feature on the Endeavor Games in 2010.
Rowland also keeps a blog, which you can read here.
“I am beyond humbled to be entrusted with a position that has such a rich and storied history at the University of Oklahoma,” Rowland said in a press release. “I have the greatest respect and admiration for Mr. Barry, Mr. (John) Brooks and all the men who have held the microphone at OU. It is with tremendous enthusiasm and excitement that I look forward to carrying the torch forward in a way that will hopefully make them proud.”
Bob Barry, 80, began working as the voice of the Sooners in 1961 when he won a tryout judged by former Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bud Wilkinson. Barry held the position until the Sooners radio rights switched hands and he left for the Tulsa job for one year before moving on to the Oklahoma State Cowboys from 1973-1990.
Barry returned to the Sooners in 1991, where he remained the mainstay until this year.
Toby Rowland will make his first appearance as the Oklahoma Sooners radio play-by-play announcer at the April 16 Red-White Spring Football Game.
