All cops experience recurring nightmares, according to Detective Jarek Wysocki (Jason Clarke) on The Chicago Code. In fact, one cop is living his nightmare in season one, episode seven, “Black Hand and the Shotgun Man.” Yet, he’s willing to face that nightmare head on by episode’s end. Watch The Chicago Code “Black Hand and the Shotgun Man” here.
Undercover cop Liam (Billy Lush) continues to be haunted by the knowledge of having accidentally killed a guy in a fire in “O’Leary’s Cow.” While his difficult situation was one of the more interesting stories on March 21st, 2011, that’s not all that happened on The Chicago Code.

The Chicago PD have finally nabbed a crime boss named Daniel Romero. While they’re unsure they can hold him any longer than two days, the perceptive Caleb Evers (Matt Lauria) gives them a much needed in. He discovers Romero’s seven-year-old son Marco has been kidnapped. With the FBI getting in the way of the case, a good result isn’t guaranteed, but Superintendent Teresa Colvin (Jennifer Beals) has a plan that, for once, works. She gets Romero off the streets–and not under Witness Protection–and keeps the rest of Romero’s family safe.
While working this case, viewers also–finally–got an insight into Jarek’s home life. Viewers already knew that he’s engaged with a young woman, yet sleeping with his ex-wife. But in “Black Hand and the Shotgun Man,” the situation gets more complicated. His son JJ discovers his father’s ex-marital affairs, and Jarek and the ex-wife can’t agree on what they are. Jarek isn’t willing to leave his fiancee, and his ex-wife decides to finally move on–maybe.
Yet, this Chicago Code episode belongs to Liam. After weeks of torturing himself over what he did to keep undercover, he’s summoned to Alderman Gibbons’s (Delroy Lindo) office. This could be the break they need in the case, but will Liam crack under the pressure?
At first it’s not clear what Gibbons wants other than Liam acting as his driver. But when the Alderman takes Liam to meet two families who recently lost a loved one, things become clear. Gibbons knows about the fire Liam set. He knows Liam killed a man. The Alderman isn’t saying he “knows” the guy, but he does know the deceased beat his wife, gambled, and made enemies.
With Gibbons’s new knowledge about Liam’s deeds, he has something to hang over him. “You are either in or you’re out,” the Alderman ominously says. When Liam says he’s ‘in,’ Gibbons declares, “Welcome to the family.”
So much for Liam wanting to be pulled from undercover status. With this new “in,” he’s determined to take down the corrupt Alderman, something he makes clear to Teresa.
With this new development, things promise to get interesting in future episodes of the FOX cop drama. But the lingering question is, if the alderman can find out about Liam’s fire, when will he discover who Liam really is?
The Chicago Code airs on FOX Mondays at 8pm.
