First things first. I didn’t steal a headline from Paul Kuharsky. What you see at the top of this article rolled right off my fingers after I read Mark Berman’s report that the Texans extended restricted free agent tenders to several players last night.
Great minds think alike, I guess.
But back to business. The Texans extended restricted free agent tenders to six players yesterday, but if free agent rules return to the way they were in 2009 when the new CBA is reached (as everyone expects), then five of those six RFA tenders mean nothing.
Well actually it does mean something – for a while at least.
The tenders mean that Owen Daniels, Matt Leinart, Mark Anderson, Jacoby Jones and Rashad Butler are restricted free agents under the current rules and the Texans have some control over their futures – that is until the new CBA is signed.
It also means that Daniels, Leinart, Anderson, Jones and Butler will become unrestricted free agents the minute the new CBA is signed, if as expected, unrestricted free agency returns to 4 years accrued service.
Bernard Pollard, Zac Diles, Tim Bulman and Kasey Studdard were eligible for RFA tenders under the current rules but were not offered tenders.
The tenders are meaningful in that it gives the Texans more time (from tomorrow until the new CBA goes into effect) to work on long term deals with any or all of those players, if that’s the plan.
Update (11:40 a.m., March 3): Owen Daniels has been re-signed according to multiple reports.
As Kuharsky points out, Mike Brisiel’s tender is the only one that will stick because he has less than the four accrued seasons required for unrestricted free agency under the old rules. An Accrued Season is a season during which a player has been on full pay status (Active, Inactive or Injured Reserve List) for six (6) or more regular season games.
We previewed this last December, although one player I didn’t account for in that article was Bulman.
As you see in my December article and not mentioned in any of these ‘tender reports’ is the fact that Jason Allen, Kevin Bentley, Shaun Cody, Vonta Leach, Matt Turk and Derrick Ward also have expiring contracts and need to be re-signed to new contracts today, otherwise they will become unrestricted when the new CBA is signed.
Update (5 p.m., March 3): Derrick Ward and Shaun Cody have also been re-signed by the Texans.
So let’s sort this out:
Eligible for RFA tender under current rules but not tendered (expiring contracts and will become free agents when the new CBA is signed)
- Bernard Pollard
- Zac Diles
- Tim Bulman
- Kasey Studdard
RFA tendered under current rules that require six years service to qualify for unrestricted free agency (but will become unrestricted when the new CBA is signed)
- Owen Daniels
- Matt Leinart
- Mark Anderson
- Jacoby Jones
- Rashad Butler
RFA tendered and will remain RFA when new CBA is signed
- Mike Brisiel
Received Exclusive RIghts Future Contract Tender and isn’t going anywhere
- Arian Foster
All the Texans had to do with Foster is extend him an Exclusive RIghts tender before midnight tonight and that prohibits him from negotiating with any other team. I would expect that the Texans are working on a long term deal with Foster.
