There’s been snow, hail and a tornado since I completed any Examiner coverage. Today is the day for it. Finally.

Poetry Month in STL is marked by performances by the ubiquitious Rodzilla who appeared at Urb Poetry during Open Mic and the following week as a feature at Urb Poetry, SoulStage and the St. Louis Poetry Slam. I think he only missed Got Lyrics?. His pieces extend and expand creating a fluid performance for the audience. Bascially, he’ll go where the audiences are ready for him to go and sometimes where they are not. The content tackles a spectrum from love in action to revolutionary actions. He definitely presents with a sense of being in the culture but not of it with Twitter-addict critique and radio play music commentary. Dynamic poet. It was a perk to audiences that he extended his visit from CA for as long as he did.
In a near contrast, the Edison Theater provided a special engagement by Universes. Billing the poetry troupe as cutting-edge prepared audiences to be shocked and swayed. This may have set some unrealistic expectations. The individual members had strong performance skills and an ability with musical theater. The extended transitional songs and dances are great for musicials – yet distractions for spoken word. With the exception of one piece on gentrification, the content didn’t fit the cutting-edge bill. Content swayed between safe and cliche with a conclusion that sent some sort of “We’re all in this together” message. It is a popular troupe with booked engagements at colleges across the country. Clearly, there is an audience for it. It just suffered, in my opinion, since I was fresh from Rodzilla’s truly raw and skillful social commentary.
On a lighter note, Spokenvizions crossed genres and put out a mixtape complication download for readers. Nice picks to inspire a writing session.
I’m including links for anyone who missed any of this talent. There is one major date remaining for April. This Friday, April 29th is the Urb Poetry Slam with a $100 cash prize. Poetry isn’t about the money or the competition. It can be though… and it definitely is on this night. Only the best win. Come out to see it in action.
