Status Quo were crowned the MLG Dallas 2011 Halo: Reach Champions today as they won their rematch against THO Impact with a 3-0 sweep in the Championship Finals.
Game one of the Championship Match (which was actually game six between the two squads) was Capture the Flag on Zealot. Impact jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as they seemed to be riding leftover momentum from their win over Believe the Hype in the loser’s bracket. Status Quo quickly tied it back up and then took the lead for themselves with flag three captures in a row. Impact fought back to keep it close but the captain of Status Quo, Flamesword, finished the game with a clutch double kill on the final capture. All four members of Status Quo had positive K/D ratios and it was clear why they were one of the top seeded teams entering this tournament.
Game two was Slayer on Countdown. It was a back and forth battle for most of the game but Status Quo just overwhelmed Impact. Enable of Status Quo had a huge game with 18 kills, 5 assists, and just 9 deaths for a +9 K/D spread. Suddenly Impact was down 5 games to 2.
The third game of the Championship Match was Assault on Asylum (which is a Sanctuary remake from Halo 2). Status Quo didn’t slow down from the previous games and quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead with the first bomb plant of the game. SQ began to dominate Impact as they added an insurance marker to increase their lead 2-0 and took over Impact’s base. Enable even began to teabag a few dead bodies.
This lit a fire under Impact and they fought back valiantly, scoring a plant with about two and half minutes left. The tides slowly began to turn and with the bomb on Status Quo’s doorstep and a chance for Impact to send it into overtime, it came down to the final seconds. Impact gave an all-out final push but it just wasn’t enough. SQ was able to hold them off and win MLG Dallas.
After suffering from an early Day One upset to 11th seeded UoR Invictus, Status Quo went undefeated the rest of the weekend taking down Second Nature, Dynasty, Swagger Like Us, Instinct, and of course THO Impact twice. Today’s win was the first MLG Championship victory for each of the members of Status Quo. It was definitely a well-deserved win and earns the team $20,000 for their trouble. Not that THO Impact was left out in the cold. They took home $12,000 for their second place finish.
