We have seen that when Jesus was on earth he extended his authority to his disciples (Mt.10:1-8). And he continues to extend it to us today. This is of great concern to our spiritual enemy. Our position of authority gives us access to the greatest power – one that Satan cannot ignore and must obey. Because Satan sees the authority and power extended to the believer, he “has specially sought to hold back this knowledge from God’s people.” (MacMillan, The Authority of the Believer) Western cultures seem especially guilty of this ignorance. Most believers don’t know they have this authority and therefore have never even tried to use it.
This authority does not come from the baptizing or filling of the Spirit. According to MacMillan, “[T]he believer’s authority exists before he seeks or realizes in any special way the Spirit’s presence.” It is not some gifting or special enduement of the Spirit. This pre-Pentecost phenomena is the birthright of every true believer.
In Eph. 1:18-21 the Apostle Paul wrote, “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that can be invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.”
Seated in heaven (Literally plural “heavenlies”, but the Hebrew for heaven is plural and is often reflected in the Greek – so Lincoln in his commentary, Ephesians) at God the Father’s right hand, the unique position of power, Christ is vastly superior to any other power in the universe. And the power that put him there is available to us today.
In Ephesians chapter 2 we read that we have been saved spiritually, made alive spiritually, and enthroned with Christ spiritually in the heavenly realm. Seated with Christ Jesus who is at the right hand of God the Father we are with him in his supreme position of power in the universe. When Christ is seated in the heavenly realm it is “far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that can be invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.” (Eph. 1:20, 21) He is above all that is or ever will be. And we are there with him spiritually. We have access through him to the greatest possible power. There is no evil person, source, or power that is not subject to his authority. All must obey this one person. The day is coming when every knee will bow:
“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
What will you do with this authority?
Will you live the length of your days as a Christian who has never accessed this incredible authority? Will you as a genuine believer in Christ let this awesome power for combating the forces of evil go forever untapped by you? Will you continue to complain to God in prayer about the evil that continually plagues your life and ministry when he has already given you the authority to call down immense power upon those evil beings? Our society is going wholesale to hell because Satan continues illegitimately to act as if he were in charge of the world. This is happening because the church is not exercising her God-given birthright to fight with the tremendous authority and power of heaven itself.
