Ladies (and gentleladies)–we’ve all found ourselves magnetically drawn to the bright pinks and shimmery turqoise signs in the Victoria’s Secret beauty products rooms. Now that their Secret Rewards campaign is running for the month of April, its the perfect time to test these products for yourself for a pretty nice bargain. (Spend $10 online here and redeem your reward card http://www.victoriassecret.com/secret-rewards#/secret_rewards). Their lotions and fragrances are ultra yummy and unmatched when it comes to quality vs. price, but are we really getting our money’s worth when we purchase the intricately packaged makeup products? The glam cheetah print boxes and sexually suggestive color-scheme names are really about the only difference between VS makeup and the brands you can find for half the price at drugstores.
The Beauty Rush lip gloss does smell good enough to eat, but be careful not to be drawn solely by the taste or bright color. Apart from the yellow and clear shades, the slightest hint of hue or glitter will show up on your lips– and glitterly lip gloss works only for 11-year-olds and perhaps Ke$ha (the latter being up for debate). For $7, the best bet would be to go for a sheer neutral shade such as Slice of Heaven to ensure that it can be worn with everything; This way, you’ll get use of it instead of it sadly lying dormant in your car’s cupholder. In conclusion, what you’re paying for is essentially the taste and decorative appeal of the tube, not necessarily the way it feels or looks on your lips. Suggestion: purchase in bulk during the Semi-Annual sales when select shades are just $1.75 (June and December).
WORTH IT? Sure (if you’re crazy about the taste/smell-go for it. It’ll last a fairly long time)
Tinted moisturizer is ideal for day, especially during pretty spring and summertime months. We don’t want to look overly matte, caked and heavily masked by thick foundation, so tinted moisturizer is our savior. The VS brand comes in three shades: light, medium, and deep. Easy enough, right? www.victoriassecret.com/ss/Satellite?ProductID=1265422125019&c=Page&cid=…. (If you’re unsure or a shade in between, go with the lighter shade and blend with a dab of liquid bronzer–remember, too light can always be corrected easier than too dark). The product retails for $14, but the tube has a pretty hefty amount and will last a while. Problem: the product doesn’t quite live up to the “moisturizer” reputation. It doesn’t go on very smoothly and almost feels chalky–you’ll have to add pure moisturizer to it to get that soothing application feel. It doesn’t do an outstanding job evening out skin tone, either (the essential point to tinted moisutizer). Faint blemishes are still very much visible, as well as any redness in your cheeks and T-zone.
WORTH IT? No. Go ahead and pay the extra $10 for the Clinique brand. Its silkier, covers more evenly and comes in a wider varity of shades: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P284201&categoryId=B70.
The Beauty Rush eyeshadow (the kind manufactured similar to a liquid eyeliner bottle) comes in a vast array of bright colors, as well as sultry evening shades: www.victoriassecret.com/ss/Satellite?ProductID=1265421397428&c=Page&cid=…. There is much more of a color selection in stores. However, steer clear of using the bright colors for your eyes with this particular product–application is very messy even when you’re careful. The stick appicator seems like a quick and manageable way to apply eyeliner, but the shadow almost always sprinkles onto your cheeks and directly below your eyes. With the green, blue or purple shade, you’ll be looking like Sugar Ray Leonard after a fight if you’re not extra careful. HOWEVER, this product is a secret genius, just not for your eyes. The Glow Nude shade works for all skin tones as the perfect face highlighter. Apply and blend directly above your cheekbones for a beautiful and bright profile. WORTH IT? No. Get the EXACT same effect for $1.00 here: http://www.eyeslipsface.com/elf/eyes/eyeshadow/brightening_eye_color
Victoria’s Secret’s strong suit is definitely its bras -their quality is unmatched! Their fragrance, lotions, and even yoga pants are also well worth the money. But when purchasing the makeup products, you’re mostly paying for your vanity table and makeup bag to be extra cute and colorful. Pay the extra price for neutral-shade products that you’ll use daily, and pay less for trends and colorful shades. Bottom line: VS makeup products are generally only worth it when they are on sale.
