Should Governor Mitch Daniels run for president?
Governor Daniels has been wavering on his decision of whether or not to run for President. Recently he has made several comments that seem to point to no. The Student Initiative to Draft Mitch Daniels seemed confident that Daniels would run against Obama in the upcoming Presidential elections, but Daniels does not seem as though he going to do it.
Daniels stated, according to the Yale Daily News, he would be supporting one of the other Republican candidates, also stating to the Student Initiative that he might not run at all, adding that he hoped their engagement and enthusiasm for politics would continue with him remaining in Indiana.
According to web site On the Issues, here is Governor Daniels’ stand:
Budget and Economy
He is in favor of growth friendly tax-cuts to reduce Indiana’s economic decline. Daniels reduced taxes on research and development and small businesses his first year in office.
Daniels is against same sex marriage or civil unions, and has said no to affirmative action in public college admissions.
Daniels is in support of lowering corporate income tax, as well as capping property taxes.
Daniels is in favor of the death penalty, and wants to prevent repeat offenders reentering the prison system with vocational training and alternatives.
Daniels favors vouchers in public schools, believes private prayer is ok, and is in favor of free college tuition for two years through use of lottery revenues.
Governor Daniels would like to make Indiana a leader in electric vehicles and solar power; he supports clean coal and alternative energy, and wants to set a goal of 25% renewable energy by 2025.
Daniels believes nothing is more contemptible than failing to pay child support.
Governor Daniels does not believe in individual or PAC campaign contribution limits.
Daniels is in favor of increasing cigarette taxes, discounting insurance to non-smokers, and believes consumers should have the ability to sue HMOs.
Stem Cell Research
Daniels is against state funded stem cell research, but finds private funding for adult stem cell research acceptable.
Daniels believes that raising taxes is the worst thing for a recession.
He is in support of an internet sales tax.
Governor Daniels would make a welcomed change in leadership for our Nation, given his proven track record in Indiana. The only question that remains is will he run?
