[This is the second part of a press release issued by the Naples Art Association regarding a lecture on Friday, May 13, by internationally-acclaimed photojournalist Harry Benson that coincides with a preview of the Association’s first national photography competition.]
Naples, FL – (April 25, 2011)
Immediately following [Harry Benson’s] lecture [at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 13], the Naples Art Association will preview its first national photography competition exhibition which was juried by Benson. Titled “Camera USA,” the association put out a call to amateur and professional photographers all over the country to submit one photograph for a chance at winning a $5,000 grand prize, airfare to Naples and hotel accommodations. The only requirements for entry were that the photograph must have been taken in the United States within the past two years. Professional and amateur photographers from 24 different states submitted images for Benson’s juried review.
“My fifty choices for the exhibit cover a myriad of photography styles. There are scenic landscapes, lush flowers, some thought-provoking photojournalism and even a surprise – a photograph of the Texas Theatre in Seguin, Texas, which was once owned by my wife’s family,” said Harry Benson. “Today photography is booming. Everyone can take a good photograph and perhaps even a great photograph with the superb digital equipment available today. My answer is always the same when asked about the new digital equipment when I am on a speaking tour as a Canon Explorer of Light: ‘Digital? It’s simply magic.’”
The preview reception for “Camera USA” is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 13 at The von Liebig Art Center at 585 Park Street in downtown Naples. Admission is free for Naples Art Association members and $10 for non-members. The exhibition and grand prize award are generously sponsored by Physicians Regional Healthcare System, City Mattress, Publix Super Markets Charities, Naples Daily News, Susan H. Earl and an anonymous donor.
