Believe it or not, it is Spring and with Spring comes the desire to get outside. Weather.com is showing average temperatures the first week of April to be between 59 and 60 degrees. Delaware and Chester County boasts many parks and recreational centers for outside activities. Get inspired by these outside opportunities to get children out of the house and moving.
The Newline Grist Mill, located in Glen Mills, Pa., has focused on education and environmental appreciation since 1704. This park offers many opportunities to explore and get fit. A treat for families would be the Mill Race and Stream 3 mile walking trail that ends at the original dam. The 150 acres is a refuge for animals, plants and birds. The Grist Mill offers several summer programs where children can explore the park through games and hand-on activities.
Goose Creek Park, located in Thornbury Township, Chester County, Pa., is a 12 acre park of open space. They have a 1/2 mile walking trail and children’s playground area. Goose creek and Pamlico River meet is this beautifully landscaped park furnished with hiking and paddling trails, and a sandy beach for swimming. The hiking trails consists of eight miles of trail that traverses through wetlands, swamps, pine trees and forest full of birds and land animals.
Clayton Park, located in Glen Mills, Pa., is the largest of the county’s parks and recreational facilities. Clayton Park has 170 acres of scenic woodlands and the rolling greens of Clayton Golf Course. The park has four playing fields and two nature trails. This beautiful park, originated in 1957, was a 59 acre parcel of farmland, that was continuously added to over the years. Clayton Park Golf Course is a 9-hole, 1600 yard course on manicured fairways. Players of all levels are welcome here and the fees very reasonable: Monday through Friday for 9 holes $9.00 and 18 holes $11.00. This is a great course to get children started to appreciate golf before they move up to a Concord Country Club like golf course.
Concord Township Park, located in Glen Mills, Pa. is one of the location for the Healthy Kids Running Series. The park consists of a sanded volley ball area, a soccer field, a wooden playground and a running/walking path nearly one mile in length. For more details see the highlighted Concord Township Park.
These are only a few of what our community has to offer. The weather is not cooperating now but it will be soon. Having a plan in mind for a place to get outside and get fit, will help families get motivated to get healthy while enjoying the outdoors.
