Who could argue with the fact that BioShock & BioShock 2 were incredible games? The graphics, the sound, the playability, the story; all of it just so well done. The underwater city of Rapture was such a captivating place to be, along with a cast of colorful characters. The brains behind the creation of Rapture, Andrew Ryan. The silent antagonist, Jack, from BioShock 1. The Subject Delta Big Daddy of BioShock 2. The normal-turned-insane splicers and, of course, the Little Sisters and Big Sisters. There are tons more characters in both games, but BioShock Infinite looks to surpass these last two games and takes a chance flying high up into the clouds with a new city, where every American has the right to bear arms ALL of the time. The city of Columbia.
The year is 1912 and Columbia disappears to where nobody knows it’s location. Being built by the United states government as a sign for peace and prosperity, everyone in the world knows about Columbia. The city’s buildings are set on top of different sections that float in the air by an unknown technology, which means that these buildings can move, sway, tilt and fall away unpredictably. Each section is connected by a hand-ridden railway system, which is how goods are also transported from place to place. The disappearence of Columbia was caused by vicious international incident, providing that Columbia may be hiding secrets that no one could ever guess.
Unlike the first two BioShock games, the main antagonist of Infinite actually speaks in full and provides a much deeper and more rich game experience, expanding the story and character relationships and backstories. The name of this man is Booker DeWitt, who is sent to Columbia by a mysterious man to save a woman named Elizabeth. The mysterious man knows of DeWitt’s profession as a Pinkerton Agent and asks for Booker DeWitt’s help to save this woman who is trapped in this city. Elizabeth has been trapped here inside of a single-room tower for 15 years, so she doesn’t know about the outside world much at all. Once the two finally meet up, they must use their skills in order to escape this lost city or forever be trapped there. DeWitt is great with firearms, while Elizabeth utilizes her special powers. Fighting as a team is crucial to survivng every battle, as Elizabeth could grow weak from using these powers, forcing the player to protect her until she recooperates.
Another key factor here, is that there will be no Big Daddies, no Little Sisters and no Big sisters to worry about, but you will definitely have your hands full in battle. The locals will stop at nothing to take you out, even possibly outnumbering you 10-1. Another new enemy type includes a robotic-type gargantuan called Alphas. These guys have enormous arms to pulverize foes with, armor-type shell and their hearts right in the middle of their chests for you to see. These guys will be tough to take out, since they’re much larger than any Big Daddy. The most intimidating foe in the game is the creature the locals call, ‘Him’. He is Elizabeth’s keeper, so if she escapes, ‘He’ will come to take her away. He looks like a gigantic hawk that stalks the skies in search of Elizabeth. His wing span is enormous and he has huge talons that could easily tear you apart. If you are to face ‘Him’ in the game, be very, VERY cautious on how you do battle with this beast.
BioShock Infinite has nothing to do with the first two games in the series, which is why it is not dubbed BioShock 3. Because of this, this will create a completely original story that players will easily be able to grab hold of, and yes, gene tonics make their return, but in a different way. Much more is to be learned on how exactly this game will shape up to be and I for one am very excited for this game, it’s release date set to be sometime in 2012, which could even change to release this year.
