(Puttaparthi, India, April 24) Today while Christians around the world were celebrating their belief in the resurrection of one god, another died in India. Sathya Sai Baba, avatar (a god incarnate), and spiritual leader of millions, died at 7:40 am at a hospital he founded, the Sri Sathya Sai super speciality hospital at Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district. He was 86 years old and had been admitted on March 28 with respiration related problems. Millions of worshipers around the world are in mourning and political figures like Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have offered their condolences. “Baba was a living God for all of us. He was the strength of people in and around the world,” said former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, an ardent follower of the Baba.
Born in the small town of Puttaparthi as Sathyanarayana Raju in 1926, he declared himself the reincarnation of the revered Indian saint Shirdi Sai Baba (d. 1918) at the age of 13. In the saint’s honor, young Sathyanarayana Raju took the name Sathya (meaning “true” or “truthful” in Sanskrit) Sai Baba. Even before that, the divine child was able to perform miracles “including ‘materializing’ flowers and sweets from ‘nowhere’.” By age 14, he had gathered the first of what later became millions of followers.
There are countless testimonials to his miracles, many of which have been performed before thousands of witnesses.
From the Web site of Sri Sathya Baba Center of Akron, Ohio:
The fame of Sathya Sai Baba was spread, in the beginning, by the stories of his “miracles”, act which cannot be explained by science and which transcend physical laws. His manifestation of material objects; the creation of sacred ash (vibhutti) on the palm and fingers of his hand, to be used for spiritual and physical healing; changing an object from one metal to another metal simply by blowing on it; all of these and many more, before hundreds of thousands of people, done “by an act of will”. He is known to heal the sick and maimed and blind; he has protected from harm those who called for help, even though thousands of miles away; he has appeared in his physical form in two different places at the same time; and he has raised from the dead several persons, including a man from California.
He has also been credited with levitating himself (very useful when walking on water) and, in a modern update of a biblical miracle, turning water into gasoline. Sathya Sai Baba’s funeral is scheduled for April 27, 3 days after his death… if, that is, he doesn’t resurrect himself first.
