After experiencing some exciting times throughout the north side of Indianapolis, it became time to enjoy the nightlife south of Interstate 70. On this particular night, the destination was Greenwood, and the location was the Oaken Barrel. The Oaken Barrel, which is located at 50 North Airport Parkway in Greenwood, is Greenwood’s first and oldest brewpub.
The establishment is the centerpiece of a commerical building, with plenty of parking and an inviting entrance. Once inside the facility, it’s clear why it’s such a local favorite to the Greenwood residents. The restaurant is nicely furnished and the use of wood throughout the facility provides a warm attractive feeling. The outside deck area is simply amazing. There is a permanent canopy that provides shelter to customers who would prefer to enjoy their meals outside. The deck area is heated, which allows customers to experience the winter scenery, while relaxing in a warm environment. The bar area is nice and cozy, with televisions in clear sight, which is a nice touch for enjoying sporting events, while enjoying a beverage.
After taking a tour of the establishment, it was time to sit down and enjoy the specials. Monday is all you eat rib night, so ribs were definitely on the agenda. The ribs were delicious, and the fries were very tasty. The staff was extremely accommodating and the customers were very entertaining.
The beverages at the Oaken Barrel are plentiful and delicious. The Oaken Barrel is a brew house and the fermenters can easily be seen from the bar area. There are seven choices of premium beers that are brewed at the facility, including the Indiana Amber, which can also be found at Victory Field, home of the Indianapolis Indians. The true gem of this establishment are the perks that their customers are able to receive.
The Oaken Barrel allows their customers to apply for a “Schmoozer” card, which provides discounts on meals and beverages after earning points. These points can lead to a personalize glass mug, that adds to the overall VIP experience. The secret gem of this establishment is the beer itself. The Oaken Barrel does bottle the majority of the beers they brew. This allows customers the ability to purchase their beers at liquor stores throughout the city. Unfortunately, liquor stores are closed here in Indiana on Sundays, however, with new laws in place, the Oaken Barrel can legally sell six packs of their own brewed beer to customers on Sundays. For the beers that are not bottled, growlers can be purchased, in which customers can still enjoy their beer at home on Sundays, if they desire. Great food, an amazing facility, and tasty beer available for purchase on Sundays, the Oaken Barrel is definitely the Gem of Greenwood.
