Noah’s Ark—could there really fit “two of every kind?”
According to mainstream Christianity, about 4300 years ago God directed Noah to build an ark and lure two of every kind into it. All other creatures (including all but “8 souls” of humans) were to be drowned by 40 days of rain and flood-waters. The LDS (Mormon) also ascribe to the Noah’s ark legend. However, the Urantia Papers give a much different version of events.
A serious truth-seeker must ask these basic questions:
>How could there be a boat large enough to fit two of every kind?
>Did this include dinosaurs?
>Half of the species eat the other half for sustenance … so how did they eat for 40 days?
>Do experts today find evidence of a total ‘earth-flood’ 4300 years ago?
>If the earth is only 6000 years old, then what of the 64 million to 120 million year old dinosaurs?
>Can evolution ‘since the flood’ produce the millions of species that exist today … in 4300 years?
>Was the great Ice Ages before or since the flood?
>How about the fish … did they elude destruction? The birds?
>If someone ‘anywhere’ on the planet had a nice boat, and was on-board when the flood hit, could he/she have survived?
>Is it possible the Hebrews exaggerated the whole Noah and the Ark story?
From the LDS scriptural viewpoint:
Only Noah and three of his sons, Ham, Japheth, and Shem (8 souls) survived, so 8 people tending to, and feeding hundreds of thousands of creatures for 40 days.
Doctrine and Covenants 138:9
9 “Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.” (1 Peter 3:18–20.)
18 ¶And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan.
Many earlier LDS authorities taught that the Canaanites are the “seed of Cain” andthat through Ham was the black race preserved, whereas Ham took a wife from Canaan. As well, the Asian race – through Japheth; and the Caucasian (white) through Shem.
If one were to logically count how many species there were 4300 years ago, what would that number be? According to Wiki.answers website there are 1,250,000 (that’s 1.2 million)that are presently identified; but conjectures from “2 to 30 million.” The 1.25 MILLION would require a boat about the size of Utah County to fit two of every kind thereon.
Even if wiki and present scientist’s figures are exaggerated by 10 times … that would still leave 250,000 species. It would take a boat the size of Salt Lake City.
What size do religionists say the Ark was:
According to www.answersingenesis.com 2002 article:
Creationist researcher John Woodmorappe has calculated that Noah had on board with him representatives from about 8,000 animal genera (including some now-extinct animals), or around 16,000 individual animals as a maximum number. When you realize that horses, zebras, and donkeys are probably descended from the horse-like “kind,” Noah did not have to carry two sets of each such animal. Also, dogs, wolves, and coyotes are probably from a single canine “kind,” so hundreds of different dogs were not needed.
According to Genesis 6:15, the Ark measured 300 x 50 x 30 cubits, which is about 510 x 85 x 51 feet, with a volume of about 2.21 million cubic feet.
This 510 x 85 feet is the size of 5 football fields, about a triple-decker. How many cages/stalls and food for such would that hold? One must keep in mind that half the species eat the other half. Logistically, this ‘ark’ just doesn’t hold water.
There is quite the contrast, however, from the Urantia Papers version of Noah and the Ark. Therein, scientists AND the religionists may find a common ground of logical truth:
77:4.12 Mount Ararat was the sacred mountain of northern Mesopotamia, and since much of your tradition of these ancient times was acquired in connection with the Babylonian story of the flood, it is not surprising that Mount Ararat and its region were woven into the later Jewish story of Noahand the universal flood.
78:7.3 Almost five thousand years later, as the Hebrew priests in Babylonian captivity sought to trace the Jewish people back to Adam, they found great difficulty in piecing the story together; and it occurred to one of them to abandon the effort, to let the whole world drown in its wickedness at the time of Noah’sflood, and thus to be in a better position to trace Abraham right back to one of the three surviving sons of Noah.
78:7.4 The traditions of a time when water covered the whole of the earth’s surface are universal. Many races harbor the story of a world-wide flood some time during past ages. The Biblical story of Noah, the ark, and the flood is an invention of the Hebrew priesthood during the Babylonian captivity. There has never been a universal flood since life was established on Urantia. The only time the surface of the earth was completely covered by water was during those Archeozoic ages before the land had begun to appear.
78:7.5 But Noahreally lived; he was a wine maker of Aram, a river settlement near Erech. He kept a written record of the days of the river’s rise from year to year. He brought much ridicule upon himself by going up and down the river valley advocating that all houses be built of wood, boat fashion, and that the family animals be put on board each night as the flood season approached. He would go to the neighboring river settlements every year and warn them that in so many days the floods would come. Finally a year came in which the annual floods were greatly augmented by unusually heavy rainfall so that the sudden rise of the waters wiped out the entire village; only Noahand his immediate family were saved in their houseboat.
