“Never trust a word a man on the prowl says,” advises Brandy.
Brandy, (not her real name), has been working in a bar since she was 18. She is now in her 50’s. She said she has over heard a lot of conversations through the years. Everything from politics, the stock market, how to solve the world problems, and pick up lines. She said when some men start handing out the lines because they are on the prowl don’t believe everything you are told. Below are the same lines she has heard repeated over and over in the last three decades she has spent working.
- My marriage is not happy.
- My wife won’t put out.
- She doesn’t have time for me. It is all about the kids, or her career, or her friends.
- It has been a long time since I have had such an intelligent conversation. You are a very smart lady.
- You are so beautiful; I would do anything just to kiss you.
- I make a lot of money.
Brandy said through experience she has learned not to lie when a phone call comes to the bar from a wife asking if her husband is there. She stated she won’t get in the middle of that because if she does then she has an angry wife coming after her. The way she gets around that is she hollers loud enough for the wife on the phone to hear her ask, “Is John here?” When no one answers she tells the wife no one responded. She said she has seen the wife then come to the bar and throw a beer on her husband. Brandy just stands back and cleans up the mess. The mess the husband is in for when he goes home is his own problem.
She explained why bars are arranged the way they are. Men like to sit at the bar where they can look straight ahead and don’t have to make eye to eye contact with the person they are sitting next to. Women prefer the tables and chairs so they can look at the person they are talking to. Men when talking with men will almost always sit at the bar and women when talking with women will almost always sit at a table. When a couple is on a date, the table is usually chosen over the bar if the couple is getting along, if not, the bar is the selected place to sit.
Brandy acknowledged most of her friends are guys, because she makes friends with people who come to the bar and the ratio is about 60% men to 40% women. She said the problem with making friends with her customers is she has lost a lot of them to death. The most frequent causes of death of her friends are car wrecks, motorcycle accidents, cancer, and alcoholism.
What she does not like are the people who are very friendly to her in the bar, but when they pass her on the street act like they don’t know her. She also does not like the women who come into the bar and play the men for free drinks.
Brandy affirmed she believes most people are basically good but all have a bad side. As a bartender for so many years she recognizes both sides of her customers. She indicated on the whole most everyone just wants a little ego boost and some attention. Brandy declared she has worked so long in the business because despite all the lies, fights, laughter, and tears, she loves people.
