That’s right! The Yello is back! After years and years of life with no Mello in my life, a gracious and kind man smuggled some into me from across state lines. I guess whenever he goes home to the midwest, he always brings himself back a case or two of this stuff – like people used to do with Coors and Bush back in the 70s. Out of the goodness of his heart he presented me with a can of Mello Yello – a South Dakota staple – even to this day.
I heard rumors that Mello Yello is poised for a nationwide comeback – and I for one Can Not Wait! According to a press release, “While Mello Yello has been widely available in the Midwest and Southeast United States, it is now spreading the ‘Mello’ state of mind to more areas of the country”.
I am impressed. At first I thought this was an actual can from the 70s, it was so perfect in all its vintage glory. But no, this was a new design, one that skipped the awful can design of the 80s, and wen t straight from the throwback original design! I mean, for a while there Mello Yello has one of the worst packages ever, next to Mr. Pibb. This one, however, is classy and sharp. Plus, like all Coke products, they list caffeine and all the other ingredients in a nice clear fashion. http://www.jeksel.com/ are one of the most talented design firms today.
When drinking a Mello Yello, the usual question comes up; “Doesn’t this taste like Mountain Dew?” Well does 7 Up and Sprite taste the same? Not even close! Even if they have mostly the same ingredients, which thy do, they taste very different. I Way prefer the flavor of the Mello over that of the Dew. Mello Yello tastes more like an orange sugar lick than the mixed citrus of Dew. Mello Yello also has a bit more of an orange bite to finish off the palate. We will have to see how the difference plays out if I ever get my hands on Diet Mello Yello compared to my staple Diet MD, but if I had a c hoice of full caloried caffeinated citrus drinks, Mello Yell! o would win hands down.
The main question people asked me while drinking my Mello Yello is if there was any caffeine difference between this and MD. Mello Yello already has a hard enough time convincing people it can give you any energy with Mello in the title of their soda. In terms of caffeine, calories and ingredients, Mello Yello is just about the same as the Mountain Dew counterparts, including Orange Juice and High Fructose Corn Syrup.
The caffeine difference is un-noticeable too. Mello Yello has has 52.5 mg of caffeine and 170 calories, compared to a Mountain Dew, with 55 mg of caffeine in 12 ounces and 165 calories. So really, they are both on par with one another.
It all comes down to the flavor, at least until I find Diet Mello Yello…
