Following last week’s rain came snow, lots of it. Cannon Mountain has just received another eight inches for a total of more than 210 inches this winter. March is also maple syrup time in the mountains. The Mountain View Resort has set up a package so that guests can take advantage of these outstanding late season ski conditions and another that lets guests have a hands-on learning experience with maple at the Rocks Estate.
A ski and stay package that includes Cannon Mountain
The ski/board package is a mid-week deal valid from Sunday night through Thursdays for the balance of this season. The package rate is $99 per person, double occupancy, per night and includes a room for two and a pair of mid-week tickets at Canon Mountain. The trails of Cannon, visible from the veranda at the Mountain View, are some of the best. Cannon is known as the place where skiing great Bodi Miller trained.
A Maple syrup weekend package
The Mountain View’s maple weekend package provides for a two-hour learning experience at the nearby Rocks Estate in Bethlehem, New Hampshire. Learn why the sap flows in a tree, how to identify the proper tree for tapping and how Native Americans used the sap to make the popular sweetener. The history tour is available at the estate from 10 am to 2 pm. The price of the maple package starts at $179, double occupancy.
In addition to the activities in these packages, the Mountain View has a number of other winter sports available. Guests can snowshoe and cross-country ski from the hotel’s grounds and there is a skating rink (with skate rentals) just across the road in front of the hotel. The concierge can also arrange dog-sledding excursions.
The Mountain View Grand Hotel is one of only a handful of historic grand mountain hotels remaining in New England. Completely winterized and renovated with all of the modern amenities expected of a luxury hotel, the Mountain View sits on a high hillside with expansive views of the White Mountains and Franconia Notch. Rooms at the hotel are beautifully appointed in a traditional style matching the elegant décor of the resort’s public spaces. The resort also has an excellent dining room and lounge facilities.
The easiest access to Whitefield and the Mountain View Grand is via Interstate 93 through Franconia Notch. Take exit 37 at Franconia, following Route 142 north, through the town square of Whitefield and up the hill. The hotel will be signposted on the right. From western Massachusetts take Interstate 91 north and at Exit 19 near St Johnsbury follow Interstate 93 south to exit 37 at Franconia and Route 142 north.
