Monty Ashley at Wizards of the Coast annouced yesterday that they will continue their Deck Builder’s Toolkit series of products.
The Deck Builder’s Toolkit is geared primarily toward new players with a budget-friendly price point of $19.99, as well as a variety of cards and booster packs to begin, or add to, a player’s collection of Magic: the Gathering cards.
The original Deck Builder’s Toolkit debuted in May 2010. Essentially, the Toolkit is a product that introduces new players to the world of Standard Constructed Magic: the Gathering. The Toolkit featured a booster from the most recent core set (it was revised from M10 to M11 after M11 was released), as well as one booster from each of the expansions in Zendikar block. In addition, it featured 85 fixed cards and 10 other “semi-random” cards based on strategies outlined in the strategy guide contained within the box. The Toolkit also came with 100 basic lands to help the new player begin constructing decks.
For the MSRP of $19.99 the Deck Builder’s Toolkit has been, in general, a great deal for new players considering the price of 4 booster packs at Walmart would be $15.92 plus tax. So for just a bit more you’re getting a solid foundation of known cards, plus some great boosters (Worldwake boosters in the Toolkit definitely added value due to the possibility of pulling a Jace, the Mind Sculptor, and then with the change to M11 boosters the additional possibility of Titans), some lands and a nifty card box.
So that being said, what can be expected of the new Deck Builder’s Toolkit? According to Monty Ashley, not much different. “In broad strokes, it’s still the same basic Deck Builder’s Toolkit.” The only major changes will be the booster packs included. Instead of Zendikar block, which will rotate out of Standard in October, Scars of Mirrodin Block will be featured. Since the product will be released on March 11, it will be interesting to see what boosters will actually be included. There will obviously be an M11 (which will change to M12 when it is released) pack, along with a Scars of Mirrodin pack and a Mirrodin Besieged pack, but the fourth pack is a mystery. My guess is that it will either be a second M11 pack or a Rise of the Eldrazi pack, and it too will be replaced once the final set in Scars of Mirrodin block is released in May. There will necessarily be a different assortment of non-random cards, and a smaller set of semi-random cards, and of course, basic lands.
Well, for what it is, that is fine. For the beginner, this is a great product. On the other hand, the potential value of the new Deck Builder’s Toolkit will be far lower than that of last year’s simply because no cards (so far) in Scars of Mirrodin block have come anywhere near the individual price value of Jace, the Mind Sculptor, unless Mirrodin Pure/New Phyrexia unleashes some major Mythic Rare upon the world.
The new edition of the Deck Builder’s Toolkit will be released on May
