Corporal Greg Whitaker, a member of the inaugural squad of the Johns Creek Police Department (JCPD), passed away suddenly Mar. 2 following a short illness.
“The JCPD has lost an outstanding police officer,” said Police Chief Ed Densmore. “Greg Whitaker did his job professionally, had great rapport with his fellow officers and the community, and he never, never complained. He left us way too soon.”
A 23-year veteran of law enforcement, Whitaker, 47, served in Uniform Patrol and was promoted from officer to corporal in January 2010. Prior to joining the JCPD in 2008, he served with the Fulton County Police Department, Cobb County Police, Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the University of Georgia Police Department.
He leaves behind his wife, Becky, and two children.
Visitation will be Friday, Mar. 4, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home at 1211 Jimmy Daniels Road, Bogart, GA. The funeral will be Saturday, Mar. 5, at 11 a.m. at Briarwood Baptist Church, 1900 Robin Hood Road, Watkinsville, GA.
After he became ill in January of this year, his colleagues at the JCPD and the Johns Creek Fire Department began planning a golf tournament — aptly called “Guns & Hoses” — to assist his family with unforeseen medical and living expenses. Please make plans to come enjoy a day of golf on one of Atlanta’s finest courses, and help the family of a devoted public servant at the same time!
The plan is to hold this event every year. Therefore, this year, the Greg Whitaker Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Mar. 28 at the St. Ives Country Club at 1 St. Ives Country Club Drive in Johns Creek (30097). Please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
