This just in: “DO YOUR DAMN JOB” from ‘You’re Country Now’ is getting over 1200 spins a week nationally. It’s #26 on the New Music Weekly National Country Chart, #16 on the Indie Chart, AND it’s made the #9 on the COUNTRY MOST ADDED Chart, the COUNTRY PRIME MOVER Chart, and #1 on MOST SPIN INCREASE Chart!
Jessica’s new release of the album “You’re Country Now” features the song ‘Do Your Damn Job.’ And as you can see it’s climbing the charts with the speed of sound! ‘Do Your Damn Job’ is rockin’ good fun and a defiant anthem of true honky-tonk blue collar and is a fan favorite at all her shows. It’s also a catharsis for Jessica Shepherd for her run in with the Comal County, Texas lawmen…yes it is true! And what was her crime? Recycling! Oh, yes, it is true. ‘Do Your Damn Job’ so fully captures that jaundiced, power crazy bureaucracy in every lyric and vocal power and lick! I did say “Fiery redhead?”
Knowing Jessica, I’m sure she gave the Comal County law an earful, and they probably gave her a hurried coming out party to say Adios! You just don’t mess with Texas girls, especially this redhead, Jessica Shepherd.
More songs on “You’re Country Now” show that Jessica always reaches for the heart with her spectacular lyrics, vocals and guitar mastery.
I love “Ethyl’s Purty Palace.” With great fun and hometown lyrics, Jessica Shepherd has so entirely and perfectly bottled the exquisite essence of what goes on in a small town beauty shop. If you’re lucky enough to have joined Mom in one, or even old enough to remember your own experience, you’ll see those memories instantly and in your sleep! The lyrics tell it all “Now what happened inside was a scared event…There was much more than shampooin’ and rinse´and a glorious a chorus of “It was a…Permin’, teasin’, fillin’, smilin’, Coffee drinkin’, bee-hive makin’ good time at Ethyl’s Purty Palace!” It pays true homage to those beauty shops where you heard and saw it all! Luckily, those Purty palaces are still around, hidden in big towns and thriving in small hometowns. Even as a child, I still remember the hairdressers promising me I would not be poufy…she lied … but the stories were worth it! Jessica, we so love you for this one!
“Five Year Fling” has that unique and definable Jessica Shepherd honky tonkin’ sound. You’ll love this one if you’re hearing “forever” but knowing it’s more of a “five year fling!” Her lyrics, strong vocals and guitar licks sure let you know this ain’t the girl’s first rodeo when it comes to a jaded look at past commitments.
With the strains of a hot fiddle, “God By Your Side” has the sound of a Country gospel revival or being transported to days gone by on the Opry stage. The nostalgic sound, Jessica’s smooth but hot vocals and back up fiddle, this is one that will lift you up and get you dancing too, just like all the songs on “You’re Country Now.” No matter what the circumstances and trials in life, Jessica reminds us that “With God By Your Side,” you’ll feel better. Amen to that.
“Honky Tonk Angel” is a quick-waltz ode to the angels in those honky tonks who are can save your soul, if only for a night…or maybe forever. Jessica’s talent with this one is impeccable and lets you know she has the versatility, perfect talent and an honesty in instinctively knowing those angel’s plights. Jessica delivers this song like no one else could.
“Humpty Dumpty” is a delightful song with that country swing beat and sly little lyrics to have you even more amazed with Jessica’s creativity and delivery! As always, her lyrics are a fun tease to a “Humpty Dumpty” kind of guy, who so wants that sweet kiss from the girl below – should he take the chance of shattering below? What an incredible comparison of a cute song, but with such a true look into taking chances.
“Soldiers of Love” has the lovely blues backing and Jessica’s passionate vocals about surviving a love past, holding to her hope of love still flickering and not yet dead. She calls for the “Soldiers of Love” to “March down here and spread it out to everyone, cause when love reigns… and spread it out to everyone cause when love reigns, the impossible can be attained.”
“Victory” … Here comes the hot sauce! The drummer is incredible on this one and sets a hypnotic pace for fast and rockin’ fiddles and Jessica’s no nonsense, strongly enticing voice. Don’t deny that urge, it will have you up dancing even if you don’t know how. It’s that old time honky tonk fast swing dancing and Jessica’s incredible voice – a little yodeling spices this song even more!
“Western Knight” has a wonderful nostalgic whistle intro and Jessica’s hint of Dale Evans in her song. It takes you to a wandering prairie horseback ride, wishing on the brightest and most beautiful Texas star for that Cowboy “Knight” with a hero’s white hat. Ok, so it may be a club you’re picturing, but I could almost hear those hoofs and that honest traditional cowgirl sound, proving again Jessica’s mastery of vocals can lend the perfect mood to whatever she sings.
The title cut “You’re Country Now” brings the album full circle. Whether it’s toe tapping to Ernest Tubb, wide tires and pickup trucks and blasting this album “Your Country Now” in that truck is just exactly what Jessica says “Just look within… accept it, embrace it … You’re country now!
Add up all the magnificent facets to Jessica Shepherd, she is totally unmatched in her songwriting crafting, professionally matured and chameleon-like vocals and ultra-intuitive ability to match genres and melodic moods to each song. And yes, she is our sister in Texas passion and music… I am proud to call her a friend and a Texas fire sister!
