How’s this for a mystery… A new video has appeared online taken by someone on the streets of New York City by cell phone showing a woman who looks just like Barbra Streisand! When the lady was approached, she ducked her head and walked in the other direction. When asked if she was Barbra Streisand, she said no.
However, if she really wasn’t Barbra Streisand, why was she turning away from the camera and hiding her face? And if it really was Barbra Streisand, what was she doing in Manhattan wearing a decidely eccentric outfit — pink down jacket, big-brimmed straw hat, dark glasses — all by herself?
According to the Simply-Showbiz web site, they’ve confirmed that it is Barbra! On the message boards around the net, fans have been arguing for days that it couldn’t possibly be Barbra. The experts are divided; some say, “Of course, it’s Barbra. Look at her face!” Others are saying just the opposite, “Of course, it’s not Barbra. Look at those earlobes!” It’s acutally very comical to hear the arguments pro and con.
So, what’s the verdict? Is it Barbra? Although there hasn’t been an official announcement, nor do I think we’ll get one, I believe that it’s most definitely Barbra. To me, there’s no doubt.
Here’s what I think is going on. In May, Barbra will begin filming a new movie called “My Mother’s Curse” with Seth Rogen. The character she’s playing in that film is a woman who lives alone in New Jersey and longs to have a better relationship with her adult son. In Dan Fogelberg’s script, Joyce Brewster’s a coupon-clipping, urbanite who trudges through cold, winter days in the Northeast…before she goes on a cross-country trip with Andy, her son, that re-charges her life in a myriad of ways.
When I saw this video of Barbra, it occurred to me that she might be doing a little character study. She’s not Barbra Streisand walking on the pavement in the cold, she’s Joyce Brewster. The ‘get-up’ may have been her idea of blending in, although it seemed to have done just the opposite.
Nevertheless, this is hardly a new thing for Barbra. When she wanted to get into the character of Cheryl Gibbons for “All Night Long,” she dressed in tacky clothes and too much jewelry, then went to the Valley to try and fit in. She was recognized then, too. For “Nuts,” she wanted to observe patients in a mental hospital. Despite her best efforts, Barbra could not just sneak in and out.
Take a look at the photo and the video; what’s your opinion? Is it really Barbra or have we all been duped?
