Nora Walker (Sally Field) reminds some of them of their mothers. Some of them wish Nora was their mother. Some of them love that Kevin (Matthew Rhys) and Scotty (Luke Macfarlane) are gay and married and have a family. Some of them love Sarah (Rachel Griffiths) and Luc’s (Gilles Marini) passionate romance. Some of them have family members who have been soldiers or battled addiction like Justin (Dave Annable). Some of them have lost a spouse. Some of them are working moms. Some of them feel hope because Kitty (Calista Flockhart) survived cancer and Saul (Ron Rifkin) is living with HIV. These are some of the reasons my column readers tell me they love ‘Brothers and Sisters’. They’ve also said, ‘we can relate to it’ and ‘it’s a show about family’ and ‘there’s nothing else like it on TV.’ I contacted ABC earlier today and they confirmed a renewal decision for ‘Brothers and Sisters’ has not yet been made. Within the last several days, international fans have contacted me to offer up some heartfelt comments about why ‘Brothers and Sisters’ is special and why they feel the show should be renewed for a 6th season.
The series is wildly popular in the UK on MORE4 and consistently ranks in the Top 10 for its time slot. UK fans started a Twitter page called BroNSistersFANS, which is open to everyone. Recent Tweets include renewal polls for TVLine and Boston Herald, in an effort to secure votes for the show.
Here are just a few of the comments I have received from UK viewers:
J said, ‘We all want it to remain in production and get a 6th Season because it really is a groundbreaking show. It has main characters that are gay, HIV positive, widowed, divorced, been through cancer….yet it shows that family gets you through anything. It’s funny, heartbreaking and it feels like receiving a big hug every week… TV without Brothers and Sisters would be like December without Christmas!’
Tanya said, ‘Nora shows that a mother can be strong and independent without being a bitch! She is there for her children, without being suffocating. And I love that. And love how all the children, even at the age they all are, gravitate towards that kitchen and a glass of wine. If I could be like Nora in some small way I would die a happy woman. I have three children and I love to think in years to come they will turn up unannounced, drink my wine, eat my food and then go back to their own homes.’
Timmy said, ‘The one thing that I find different about this show is that it’s about a real, blood related family: many other shows such as Will and Grace and Friends have always focused on friends as families, but this programme in particular focuses on a true family. It needs to be renewed for a 6th Season because the programme demonstrates that no family is perfect, but that your family will always love you no matter what and will forever help you out.’
Tom said, ‘I think that Brothers and Sisters is a superb combination of drama and comedy. It illustrates the drama and comedy of family life. The actors are incredible and have been since series one. However I feel a programme based on family such as Brothers and Sisters only gets better as time goes on. This is because of the familiarity but also because this is a show which had endless possibilities. It is one of the only programmes which has represented a gay couple in a manner which doesn’t suggest it’s trying to be ‘cool’ or ‘edgy’, one of the only programmes which illustrates that cancer is shit at times, it doesn’t make everyone thankful and happy 24/7.’
Stuart said, ‘The show has such a good loyal UK fan base because the core of the show is about family and the strong relationships they all have. Few shows nowadays really connect with the audience in this way. The strong cast and the chemistry they all have make it so believable, and the great writing keeps you hooked all the way through. It is one of a few US imports I have watched from the beginning and my favourite show from the US. It would be such a shame to end it on S5 as there is so much more you can do with the cast and the stories. Please, just one more!’
Dagi, from Germany said, ‘Brothers & Sisters is a very realistic show. It´s about family – the most important thing in the world. I can identify myself with each family member. I can laugh and I can cry with the Walkers. They fail but never give up. There is always hope. After bad times comes good times. I love each character for being strong (Nora Walker) for being brave (Kevin and Justin) for never giving up (Sarah) and for standing up for your opinion (Kitty).’
Rosi from Brazil said, ‘It is my favorite show because it is a close-knit family and this is very rare nowadays, so I think very important to be renewed.’
Again, these are just a few of many comments I have received.
Overall, the message ‘Brothers and Sisters’ fans from the US and around the globe sent me was pretty clear: Our hearts are invested in the Walkers. We laugh with them and cry with them. We pull for them and relate to them. Above all, we love that they are a family, who gives us hope in our own. Please bring us another season ABC, because there is nothing else like it on television.
