The Los Angeles based indie pop quartet, Y LUV, whose buoyant, energetic music have made them a favorite of college campuses across Southern California, will release a brand new EP, How Chill Can You Let Go on April 20. The new EP will be available on iTunes and at local independent retailers.
Often compared to such disparate bands as Arctic Monkeys, Kings Of Leon, Bloc Party and The Killers, the band’s anthemic approach to songwriting and considerable playing skills have been honed over two years of playing and recording together. How Chill Can You Let Go was produced by Josiah Mazzaschi, owner of LA-based The Cave Studio. In addition to fronting his own band Light FM, Mazzaschi is a highly respected engineer and producer, most recently working with Jesus and Mary Chain alum William Reid on his solo debut album.
Y Luv’s music is refreshing to my ears. I had heard Freddy Janney’s [lead singer of Y Luv] demos and thought that with the right production they could go far, says Mazzaschi. Their music is commercial yet unpredictable. Their influences are written on their sleeves yet they craft songs that are both original and organic.
How Chill Can You Let Go includes five energy-bursting tracks, from the hypnotic, starry-eyed feel of “All Night” to the meaningful lyrics and epic harmonies in the band’s opening track “Never Touch The Ground.”
“‘Never Touch The Ground’ is about my life right now, Janney says. “I’m about to graduate from college. It is a moment of big transition in my life. As my years in school are coming to a close, I’m starting to realize it’s not so black and white. You can be an adult and not lose the imagination and creativity, spontaneity you have as a kid. You can make your life what you want it.”
“All Night” is about the unknown and emotional confusion of where our lives are right now, Janney states. Sometimes it feels like something is just not right, like you’re waiting for someone or something to make it all make sense. But from this confusion also comes moments where you just let go and accept where you are right now and enjoy the shit out of it, because they are moments (whether you think they’re perfect or not) you will never forget.
To support the band’s new EP How Chill Can You Let Go, they will be playing multiple dates throughout the Southland, including April 13 at the band’s home base of USC.
