The music scene at Cantrell’s of Fayetteville WV this weekend offered the first show of a new band named Illusionary field unit. IFU consists of four very talented men, Scott Gilger (vocals/rhythm), Andy Duncan (rhythm/vocals), John Ashley (bass/vocals) and Josh Bibb (lead guitar). Rob from the Boatmen sat in with his bongo to play with them as well. This weekend was their very first show as a band. They formed Illusionary field unit last August. IFU’s style of music is “Americana slam jam” that made the room feel like a Quentin Tarantino movie. The crowd was small this weekend and really enjoyed the Illusionary field unit’s unique sound and spectacular playing.
Scott Gilger moved from Colorado to Beckley WV thirteen years ago. He and Andy Duncan have been playing together for twelve years now and it showed; much to the delight of the crowd. Josh Bibb proved to be the highlight of the night with his spectacular playing. Josh is only twenty-three and plays with the skill of a seasoned musician. He has been playing since he was fourteen and plays the bass and piano as well.
Playing at Cantrell’s ensures exposure and recognition for bands starting out in the Fayetteville WV area. Cantrell’s show cases bands every weekend as part of their rafting season attractions due to their trips starting on the New River, March 18th. Cantrell’s bar is open Monday through Saturday from 3 – close. Closing times vary according to the size of the crowd but the bands start playing between 9pm and 10pm each weekend. The night didn’t start out smooth though. Fayetteville was hit with a terrible wind storm that knocked the power out for hours. IFU did not give up. Scott told me they “…were praying the power would come back on or they would be playing by candle light…”
IFU started their first set at 10pm this weekend. The night was filled with covers like “Wagon Wheel” and “Last dance with Mary Jane” extremely well done with their own style shinning through. Illusionary field unit also came prepared with great originals like “Whisky town” and “Paper back Jesus”. This was their first show but not IFU’s last. Look for Illusionary field unit to play again soon in Fayetteville, Beckley and through out West Virginia.
