Traditionally most Americans follow the path of the parents and grandparents. We accept the church they force us to attend because we know of no other path and we respect the judgment of our elders. But as grow older, we find some of the teachings of our parental religious organizations to be questionable and at times not in alignment with our own spirituality. Being raised Roman Catholic, the Lord’s Prayer was a large part of my upbringing. I later learned from one of my master teachers Dr. Rocco A. Errico, the foremost biblical scholar of the Aramaic language, that the Lord’s Prayer was incorrectly interpreted. Dr Errico translates thusly:
Our Father who is everywhere
Your name is sacred.
Your kingdom is come.
Your will is throughout the earth
even as it is throughout the universe
You give us our needful bread from day to day,
And you forgive us our offenses
even as we forgive our offenders.
and you let us not enter into materialism.
But you separate us from error.
Because yours are the kingdom, the power and the song and praise.
From all ages, throughout all ages.
(Sealed) in faith, trust and truth.
This is a huge difference in the meaning of the prayer as we know from the King James version. As we progress throughout the ages, in technology, architecture, and living so to must we evolve in our spirituality. We must change our thinking about faith and spirituality in order to overcome our issues with religious dogma and doctrine. My grandmother would tell me that God was as close to me as my breath. She was correct in so many ways; it was beyond my comprehension at the time. Now I see that through prayer and meditation that I can listen to the still small voice within my own being to guide and direct me.
God did not silence its voice when the bible was written. God’s words span the universe and interconnect the sand of time. God speaks though us as us and we are here to share its wisdom with the world. We do not have to see a priest, minister or rabbi to get a word from God. We simply have to learn how to pray with an affective attitude of gratitude and mediate in the stillness of God every last throughout eternity. Praise is the pick-me-up of the brain and is the essential essence of praying with gratitude. An attitude of gratitude has transforming effects. For me, growing up in the south created a culture called southern hospitality that has helped me a lot in my new way of thinking.
So how do you pray with an attitude of gratitude? First, make a list of the words to reject from your vocabulary i.e.: hate, stupid, ugly, etc… Then start to incorporate words of love and support i.e. Please, Thanks, Good, etc… At this point create a list of things you are thankful for and a list of praiseworthy things about yourself i.e. I am thankful for my fully functioning car; I am thankful for a wonderful job; I am thankful for waking up, etc… For praiseworthy statements choose thing that reflect your accomplishments and on individual greatness i.e. I praise myself for graduating college; I praise myself for accomplishing all of tasks on my to-do list, I praise God for the protection he surrounds me with from moment to moment, etc… It is a known fact that when we receive praise for our efforts; we do better and try harder. If any negative thoughts come to your mind, IMMEDIATELY say the words “Cancel, Cancel, Cancel” and replace it with a positive loving thought.
Praise and thanksgiving must become habitual in order to destroy and eradicate your old way of thinking. We love to praise and thank after we receive something but for effective healing your praise and thanksgiving must occur while you are in the midst of your muck and mire. It is this ability to show true gratitude in the midst of you change that produces the results you so desperately seek. This is a way through repetition to force your brain reorganize the neurons of your brain to more positive thoughts and to produce peptides that will help you function in a healthy and fulfilling manner.
Praise and thanksgiving raises your spiritual vibrations, stabilizes your emotional wellbeing, heals your physical ailments and rejuvenates your mental state. Remember, you did not get this way over night and the change will take time, but the way to accomplish this is through consistency. Changes will take place in your life because of this practice. But hear me clearly on this note: Change is God forcing a correction in your life. Embrace it and go with the flow. Praise and thanksgiving is not intended for God. It is intend for the man who is seeking aid to enable his own self worth in order to uplift himself from his current situation and into the state where he is attuned with all that is good, joyful and prosperous in his life.
