Team Pacquiao painted a thrilling picture during last week’s media workout in Hollywood, CA.
Manny Pacquiao will head into next month’s bout with Shane Mosley off the best training camp of his career.
Manny Pacquiao is ready like never before.
It could be the fight of the year when Pacquiao and Mosley will face off on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. A solid tune-up, though, will happen a day earlier at the Fantasy Springs Casino in the California Desert near Palm Springs. Southern California favorites Librade Andrade and Enrique Ornelas and hometown hero Randy Caballero will be featured in separate bouts on the May 6 card.
Pacquiao has tremendous respect for Mosley.
“He is a former pound-for-pound, he’s a good fighter,” Pacquiao said. “I am not over confident and I won’t underestimate him.”
Pacquiao wouldn’t admit to the distractions pointed out by the boxing media before his bout with Margarito but Pacquiao did admit he is feeling good. “
“What I can say right now is that I’m in condition and ready to fight,” he said.
Pacquiao also said he isn’t going to fight forever.
“We have to accept that we will not stay young,” Pacquiao said. “We are getting older. Our minds, we think we are young. But our bodies say we are getting older.”
Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, said his fighter was in peak condition.
“From the time I visited him to the time he arrived here, he is unbelievable shape,” Arum said. “His spirit is good and I can’t criticize anything about his training. From what I can see, everything is copasetic.”
Team Pacquiao changed things around for this training camp. It spent three weeks in the Philippines and will spend five weeks in the United States. It was the other way around prior to the Margarito fight.
“This is the best start we have ever had,” Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach said. “Probably the least distractions we’ve ever had in a training camp. Manny is confident but he not taking this guy lightly.”
Pacquiao seems to have more respect for Mosley than the boxing media.
“I think he understands that this is not an easy fight,” Roach said. “I think Shane will bring all he can. I think the first five rounds will be critical. Shane does have knockout power.”
And of course the name of Floyd Mayweather came up.
“If Manny is successful against Mosley, he would love to fight Floyd,” Arum said. “Apparently Mayweather isn’t ready to pull the trigger.”
The Pacquiao-Mayweather drama has been dragging on for about two years now.
“It is what it is,” Arum said. “I can only deal with what I can affect. I can’t deal with what is beyond my control.”
