Switching to a more organic and natural way of eating is topping the healthy resolution list for many people. I was pleased to see that one of the local grocery stores has a wonderful organic and natural selection of food. I spent some time browsing, shopping and visiting with a couple of employees at the Post Falls Super 1 Foods store.
The produce section has one entire cooler dedicated to organic produce. Most of your produce favorites are offered along with a few specialty items not on the average grocery list.
In the Super 1 organic aisle there is a bulk food section, dry and canned goods, freezer section, and dairy case. I spoke with Amelia, an employee of the store who said that the top organic items currently are almond milk and local milk. The Ezekial Bread is very popular as well as the Chobani Yogurt. There is also a nice selection of organic wine from a variety of wineries such as Grey, Badger Mountain, Naked, and Natura. Amelia says that the organic aisle has been very popular and the frozen and gluten-free sections have grown in the past six months due to popular demand. While they cannot carry everything that a specialty market does, Amelia says, “we try to give the people what they want.”
Over in the meat department I spoke with Cory who is one of the butchers. He said that they prefer to sell fresh and natural Draper Farms Chicken over the other leading brands. They also carry organic chicken from Draper Farms with a bit higher price tag than the natural. When you choose the natural over organic meat you are getting the benefits of a meat that has no added hormones or antibiotics. Since it is not certified organic, it is less expensive.
Super 1 offers organic buffalo meat in the freezer section of the organic aisle along with natural bacon, hot dogs, and sausages. They do not have organic beef, but they do carry Painted Hills Natural Beef. The beef has no added hormones or antibiotics and is fed a 100 percent vegetarian diet. The store features one of their natural cuts of beef weekly as a special. For example, this week the special is Painted Hills eye of round steak. Cory said that the beef is cut fresh daily by the Super 1 meat department employees. I have found that their meat department is always extremely helpful in helping you find what you want.
Whether you go completely organic and natural or not, you can find exactly what you are looking for at this local hometown store. If you have not yet tried organic foods, why not give it a shot in honor of National Nutrition Month? You may be pleasantly surprised…I was!
