Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball Tour is an eight-legged beast. It’s been running for three years since it kicked off in Montreal on November 27, 2009 and tonight, the Ball rolls into Canada for the third and last time.
Aside from Gaga’s undying love for her “little monsters”, which she continuously professes, and the $100+ million dollars the tour has reportedly raked in, the international megastar says she keeps coming around because she’s simply gaga for Canada.
“It’s so special. I’m really happy to be here,” Gaga flirts. “It was really Canada that stood by me, really held on and told the whole world about me.”
It’s hard to believe that just four years ago Gaga was barely known outside New York City. Today Gaga has no trouble commanding international attention. You know it, I know it and the whole world knows it. Still, for sake of argument, if there is one at all, take her latest single, “Judas”. With its release so close to Holy Week and Easter, this queen bee is causing a big buzz. The world hasn’t even seen the release yet and it’s already a hot topic.
The upcoming video stars Gaga in the role of, [insert drum roll here] the one and only, Mary Magdalene.
Most of us have seen “Alejandro” or at least heard about the religious controversy surrounding the video, so we can only imagine what she’ll do with “Judas”.
Sure Gaga is pushing the exact same buttons Madonna punched in 1989, but her name is now on the lips of everyone from club kids to Vatican officials. I’ll bet 30 pieces of silver that’s the idea.
And because we live in a world fixated on numbers, here’s a little statistic side note for you. Gaga is the most googled celebrity of 2010 at a toppling 151 million searches. Can you say you’re surprised?
Love her or hate her, Gaga has spread like a global epidemic and Canada was first to catch the bug.
“Canada was my first #1 record,” Gaga says of her 7x platinum debut album. Her Canadian love affair doesn’t end there, “[Canada] is my first time for everything, she adds. “My first boyfriend was from Toronto and my first award.”
After winning countless Canadian hearts, Gaga won Best International Video at the 2008 MuchMusic Video Awards for “Poker Face”, and the nation won’t soon forget her explosive performance.
“It’s important for me to give my Canadian fans something that I felt they really earned,” Gaga says, “I felt like they really earned an incredible performance” and that’s exactly what Gaga delivered.
The “Born This Way” singer emerged from a subway train and performed her hits “Poker Face” and “Love Game” and shot fireworks from her breasts.
“My new name is hot tits!” Gaga smirks.
If you’ve seen the video for “Bad Romance”, a couple live numbers from the Monster Ball Tour, or the cover of TIME magazine, then you are well acquainted with the Pyro-Bra, but maybe not its conception.
“It’s a funny story,” Gaga says remembering her bra’s debut at the 2008 MMVAs. “When I was speaking to MuchMusic, we were having problems figuring out how to build that subway train and get it on and off the stage. I said, ‘Well if you can’t build my subway train, I’m going to blow my tits up! I’m thinking Helmut Newton! Conical bra! Ode to Madonna! Fire!’”
“David Lachapelle,” Gaga adds, “was in the background screaming, ‘Lactate! [The bra] should lactate!’”
Thirsty for more Gaga? Well, open wide! Gaga’s milking her Monster Ball Tour and isn’t going to let it dry up that easy. Mama’s got HBO broadcasting your dose, Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden on May 7, just 24 hours after her last show date in Mexico City.
If that’s still not enough Canada, you’re in luck because Mother Monster isn’t easing up. She is coming back again for the 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards on June 19. God only knows what Gaga will have up her sleeve or down her bra this time around.
Speaking of Gaga’s garments or lack of, what’s with all her freakish fashions, outrageous accessories and show stopping performances anyway?
“I remember watching shows when I was little and dreaming about being on stage,” Gaga explains. “I want to be that for somebody else.”
Lady Gaga Presents: The Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden airs on HBO Saturday, May 7.
Watch for Gaga at the 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards on Sunday, June 19.
