TCHAIKOVSKY SYMPHONY NO. 5
WITH THE FORT WORTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
FORT WORTH – When the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra performed Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony at Carnegie Hall in 2008, the New York Times hailed it as “first rate…an assured, rich-hued and impassioned account.” Don’t miss the Bass Hall performance of this powerful symphony — it will take your breath away. And Charles Lindberg’s Chick’a’Bone Checkout is a trio of beautiful colors, chords and melodies in which a single soloist plays the alto, tenor and bass trombones. It was written for Charles Vernon, principal trombonist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, who makes his FWSO debut with these performances. Suppé’s Light Cavalry Overture will open the concerts on Saturday and Sunday only. Music Director Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducts.
The concerts take place March 25, 26 and 27 at Bass Performance Hall. Performances start at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10-$79 and are available at www.fwsymphony.org or 817-665-6000.
Learn more about the music at Symphonic Insights, hosted by Shields-Collins “Buddy” Bray, principal keyboardist of the FWSO. The interactive lecture series takes place one hour before each concert in the audience chamber.
Charles Vernon began his orchestral career in 1971 as bass trombonist with the Baltimore Symphony. In 1980 he joined the San Francisco Symphony for one season. He was then chosen by Riccardo Muti to play bass trombone with the Philadelphia Orchestra, where he performed for five years until joining the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO).
A native of North Carolina, he attended Brevard College and Georgia State University, where he studied with Bill Hill and Gail Wilson. His mentors and teachers were Arnold Jacobs and Edward Kleinhammer, both former tuba and bass trombone players of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Vernon teaches trombone at DePaul and Northwestern universities and has many solo and teaching appearances throughout the world.
In 1991, with the CSO under Daniel Barenboim, Vernon gave the world premiere of Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Concerto for Bass Trombone, commissioned by the orchestra for its centennial. In 2006 he and the CSO premiered Chick’a’Bone Checkout, written by trombonist and composer Christian Lindberg. FWSO’s Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducted.
