By now you’re probably wondering, “If this book is called The Scarecrow of Oz, then where’s the Scarecrow?” A fair question! Like Tik-Tok, he’s surprisingly absent for a good chunk of the book named for him. But now, exactly halfway through the story, he finally turns up.
Glinda had been keeping tabs on events via her Great Book of Records, and as the Scarecrow had popped in for a visit, he willingly volunteered to go and help the travelers in Jinxland. Glinda provided him with a magic rope to help him scale the mountains and “certain magical things” about which she gave him instructions.
Among those objects were two small pills which the Scarecrow fed to a spider, which then spun two strands of webbing across a gulf to let him cross it.
Back in Jinxland, Button-Bright had gotten lost again. Pon and Trot saw King Krewl and his guards leading Gloria down the road and followed them to the house of Blinkie, who, with a trio of witches, enacted the spell which froze Gloria’s heart, making her unable to love anyone, even herself.
Pon and Trot accidentally made their presence known and took off running as Blinkie gave chase, rather stiffly, and the other witches flew away. Managing to evade her, they soon met Gloria, who was utterly unmoved by Pon’s entreaties of love, devastating the young gardener’s boy.
However, Krewl’s plan had backfired; when met by Googly-Goo, Gloria rejected him as well and refused to marry him.
Pon and Trot stopped to rest by a cornfield, where, appropriately enough, they met the Scarecrow, who himself soon fell foul of the witch as she ripped out all his stuffing and hobbled off again.
Cap’n Bill the grasshopper alit on the Scarecrow’s head and soon Trot and Pon came back, having finally given Blinkie the slip. With the wandering Gloria, they put the Scarecrow back together.
Putting his brains to the task, he decided on a plan to conquer Krewl. First Pon went to parlay and got a right royal beating for his pains. Next, the Scarecrow went himself, only to get captured and sentenced to burn at the stake!
Meanwhile, the Ork had returned and restored Button-Bright to the rest of the group. Promising to help the Scarecrow, he flew off again.
The help came just in the nick of time. Even as the flames of the bonfire to which the Scarecrow was bound started licking towards him, a sudden, rushing wind blew them out, as well as blowing King Krewl out of his throne and Lord Googly-Goo up into a tree.
A great flock of Orks, fifty in number including our original Ork friend, who was their leader, swooped in from on high, propellers whirling, and rescued the Scarecrow. As the people of Jinxland rejoiced at the overthrow of cruel King Krewl, the former monarch and Googly-Goo were arrested by the soldiers and the Ork placed the crown of Jinxland on the Scarecrow’s head.
