‘Baba Booey’ ran in the 2011 LA Marathon on Sunday morning. The official Honda LA Marathon bib, with the number 5532 in the center and Baba Booey printed in bold letters just above, was pinned on the Howard Stern Show fan Carlos Falcon who once again took to the streets to keep the Stern fan mantra alive.
“Baba Booey we love you,” yelled a spectator from the sidelines at the LA Marathon. A Howard Stern fan obviously had seen the bib as Falcon ran by and knew the celebrity significance as it is the longest running joke from the syndicated Howard Stern Show.
Baba Booey. better known as Gary Dell’Abate, is the executive producer of the Howard Stern Show and jokingly called a sidekick. He got his name ‘Baba Booey’ during The Howard Stern Show on July 26, 1990, after telling a story of his prized collection. During the live discussion of Quick Draw McGraw, he misstated the name of McGraw’s sidekick Baba Looey as Baba Booey. The rest of the cast caught his mistake and to this day, he is still called Baba Booey. Yelling his nickname on television during live events, putting it on signs and even using it to signal other fans,it is a tribute to the Howard Stern Show that unites admirers across the country.
Carlos Falcon has been running in the LA Marathon for the past 3 years with the ‘Baba Booey’ bib and even though it was pouring down rain across the city, Sunday was another run for ‘Baba Booey.’ The staunch Howard Stern fan was out on the course representing with the best intentions as he is a huge supporter of the show now on Sirius XM. He is the only runner on the west coast that is known to put ‘Baba Booey’ on their racing bib and the LA Marathon officials don’t seem to mind at all honoring his request..
Interviewing Carlos Falcon, after running the race today, there isn’t any doubt this racing tradition has Howard Stern fans captivated in California. Watching the race live, people seek Carlos Falcon out on the course knowing they can yell ‘Baba Booey’ as he runs by. Being this is the 7th time that Carlos put the sidekick of the Howard Stern Show on the race bib; the Stern fans support gets bigger each race.
“Sometimes I hear people screaming. I get high fives,” explains Falcon. He tries to acknowledge everyone but if he has already passed them on the course he will flash a thumbs up and keep on running. “It’s motivation on the course to do my best, but I do stop to shake hands with other Howard Stern fans. When people see ‘Baba Booey’ they either get it or they don’t.”
Talking about the Howard Stern Show, Carlos Falcon pulls no punches on why he likes the show and has been a fan for years.
“I like his honesty. It is totally refreshing. While I don’t always agree with everything Howard Stern says, I find his whole concept incredibly open,” comments Falcon on the Howard Stern Show. A long time listener, he remembers when the show was on Los Angeles radio and could be heard on the radio station KROQ. Today, the fan listens to the shock jock and his crew in the car with Sirius XM on the way to work and then when he is at work, Falcon listens on his smart phone.
Falcon, a resident of Pasadena, California has kept all 7 race bibs just in case anyone else wants to see them. Neatly framed and placed on his office wall for viewing, he says it is easy to decipher those who know the Howard Stern Show and those who don’t just by gauging their immediate response to the racing bibs.
“If people ask then I assume they don’t listen to the show,” states Falcon. “So I tell them not to worry about it. Those who do, like a co-worker in my office, we have a good laugh.”
This year the marathon was cold for Falcon and the rest of the runners, but he couldn’t complain. His time for the LA Marathon was four hours, thirty two minutes to complete the race. The runner will be representing the Howard Stern Show again as he plans to race in the San Francisco marathon as well as Las Vegas marathon later in the year.
The real Baba Booey, Gary Dell’Abate, has got to be proud he was represented in the LA Marathon this year and he didn’t even move a muscle. Carlos Falcon has got a great attitude about a show he loves and all the support he gets is simply by writing ‘Baba Booey’ and running during a marathon.
