The Examiners covering all of the NFL teams gathered for their annual “Mock Draft”. The results are similar to what NFL fans have been reading from so-called “draft experts” from Coast to Coast. However, this year’s actual draft, to be held starting Thursday April 28, could produce some surprises.
A quick re-cap of the first four picks of the Examiners’ Mock Draft:
- Panthers – Cam Newton, QB Auburn
- Broncos – Marcell Dareus, DT Alabama
- Bills – Blaine Gabbert, QB Missouri
- Bengals – AJ Green, WR Georgia
With the FIFTH pick in the NFL Examiners Mock Draft, the Arizona Cardinals selected Von Miller, linebacker for Texas A&M.
For a team that has so many needs, selecting Von Miller is a no-brainer. Miller is ranked in the top five in virtually every draft board in the country and for good reason. His exceptional speed and ability to get to the quarterback is something the Cardinals very much need. Miller is on the board because the run on quarterbacks started early with the number 1 and number 3 picks being quarterbacks.
Immediate Impact: The Cardinals play in the mediocre NFC West. This means two games each with the Seahawks, Rams and 49ers. All of these teams have a young or unproven starter at the quarterback position. Last season, the Cardinals defense gave up passing touchdowns to the likes of Sam Bradford, Alex Smith, Troy Smith and Matt Hasselbeck in key divisional games. Having Von Miller on the field would instantly help the Cardinals pass rush, which finished in the middle of the NFL team rankings last season.
No QB Available: I’d like to thank Panthers Examiner Greg Jones for taking Cam Newton with the first overall pick. While the Cardinals have a vital and obvious need at quarterback, Newton isn’t the answer. The Panthers can deal with Newton and all of his baggage. Blaine Gabbert is an option for the Cardinals, but he went third in the mock draft to the Bills. Other potential quarterbacks in this draft that could still be available in the second round include Jake Locker of Washington, Andy Dalton of TCU, Ryan Mallett of Arkansas and Christian Ponder of Florida State.
The Cardinals WILL have a new quarterback under center when the 2011 season begins. The most likely scenario is a free agent (Marc Bulger?) or trade (Kevin Kolb, Carson Palmer??).
Thursday night will certainly be an interesting time at Cardinals Headquarters.
