Ok, let’s start by saying I have NEVER been a fan of Diddy’s foray into dance music. Not the productions, performances or the remixes. Finally, one young fiery remixer has changed all that and made me believe in the power of a good producer on your side.
Everything starts with a Zedd…
Let me introduce Anton Zaslavski, know to the masses as ZEDD. Young, hyper-talented and about to take the electro world by firestorm.
At the age of four, Anton followed his families’ musical gift by learning the piano, a perfect base for a long musical career. As any producer knows, a good piano will take you a long way, and it shows in Zedd’s big room piano driven builds. Far be it from us to pigeonhole this driven, German-based upstart!
“Well, at first instance, I just wanted to create good music -being it Electro House, Progressive House or whatever.”, shares Anton from his home in Germany, “It came together that my music was mostly put into “Electro House” (which I think is fine) but I don’t wanna limit myself and do JUST Electro House to make it fit the Electro House genre on Beatport etc… I would love people to be more openminded towards ‘new music’. I live in Germany and our culture of electronic music is pretty much based on either commercial pop / house music or minimal / tech house stuff. I would love clubs and Djs to drop some hard Electro, some Dubstep or whatever is good. I feel like in North and South America a bit of what I’m looking for is already coming up, maybe Germany is a little bit behind yet. “. Definitely forward thinking.
Zedd Knows No Limits
Brand new Okanagan based No Limits Entertainment is taking no time making a huge impression on the B.C. Nightlife calendar. At 3 months old, the company, headed by promoter / producer Brett “Electrobot” MacPherson, has held court in Penticton’s brand new 535 club, and now the prestigious Sapphire Nightclub in Kelowna.
“I felt that there were not enough underground electro house artists coming tot he Okanagan and headlining events at major clubs, so Idecided to start bringing some.”, promoter Brett recalls, “I have never seen (Zedd) perform live, but I’ve been talking to him for a while now & his productions are unreal. I would assume his performance would be nothing less than mind blowing!”
Anton Zaslavski couldn’t agree more, when asked about his upcoming Kelowna appearance. “I have a few – let’s say “signatures” in my music that I always like to keep. But I am definitely open to any kind of music and my upcoming songs will show that. I have songs, coming out soon, that people would probably never ever guess I produced. So there might be some nice surprises for sure.”
5 minutes with ZEDD
IH: How old are you Anton?
AZ: I’m 21.
IH: What has been one of your favorite moments performing live so far?
AZ: I must definitely say: Beyond Wonderland 2011! My flight had a delay and the traffic from the airport to Beyond was horrible. I literally jumped out of the plane after a 13-hours-fly, got into the car and ran on stage for a (applause!) 15-minutes-set! I thought people would hate me for being there for, like, 4 songs, but seeing people still be happy and singing the tracks along was phenomenal!
IH: What are your views on dubstep, does it have lasting power like electro?
AZ: Yes, it has! To me dubstep is a little bit more like “metal” music. It’s more about power and energy than (primary) about nice melodies or harmonies. I think that the dubstep scene is currently really coming up and I think dubstep and electro can both consist and last at the same time.
IH: Who would be a dream producing partner, and why?
AZ: Currently ‘Wolfgang Gartner’ because I absolutely love all of his music and he has always been a huge inspiration for me. I’d also love to work with Keri Hilson one day, I’m a huge fan of her and would definitely love to get her vocals on one of my tracks one day!
IH: Who is the guilty pleasure on your iPod, that no one would expect?
AZ: I don’t have it on my iPod because I’ve just cleaned it but it COULD HAVE BEEN everything from Taio Cruz to Katy Perry. I love Katy! So – no guilty pleasure actually haha!
IH: Top 3 favorite producers (that you haven’t worked with?)
AZ: Wolfgang Gartner, Deadmau5 and Axwell!
IH: Describe your personal tastes (clothing, food, travel).
AZ: Ough, that’s a hard one. Can be anything! Just needs to be good! Food: EVERYTHING! Travel: must be warm. I’m not a fan of rain and cold days.
IH: What do you on a quiet night alone?
AZ: I do work! When other people sleep it’s the only time I can really work and no-one can disturb me! ________________________________________________________________
