East Middle School, once known as East Junior High to Traverse Citians. Is a very community and student oriented atmosphere. Good thing for a school. It may seem odd to read that in regards to a school, but there are some schools out there that really aren’t student oriented. East Middle School has a staff that is genuinely concerned about their students. This is evident in the staff bulletins that are sent out weekly to the staff. The bulletins provide information about extra curricular activities taking place, meetings, as well as other information that is important for the staff to be aware. The reason that it is pointed out that East Middle School is so student oriented is because they are genuinely concerned for their seventh grade student body right now. Apparently this group of seventh graders is dealing with some severe and above average issues lately; behavioral, emotional and just excessive teenage angst. Most schools would just blow this off as a “bad group of students” or attribute it to other forces that they can not control. East Middle School is trying to rally together and help this class as a whole to dissolve the attitude and rebuild the moral in this group of students.
For at least three of the past five months they have also been attempting to do different fundraisers in the school for things aside from student sport and activities fundraisers. The latest in the school was a gently used or new stuffed animals to be collected and sent to the Grand Traverse Court House. This is completely unique and heartfelt.
The staff has been very supportive of the guest teachers in their building too. The staff has made it more of a point to be welcoming to the guest teachers and even checking in occassionaly to assess how the guest teacher’s day is going. This has been a pleasant change from the past couple of years. There are a few office personel who could TRY to be a bit more polite and welcoming; it maybe just a part of the person any more and not so much an attitude towards others. There are just a couple though, the rest have been stellar!
The student body at East Middle School is generally, a joy to work with. There are the occassional classrooms of chatty kids or educationally challenged that do not want to do as they are supposed to. For the most part the students are respectful of their peers, the staff and even the guest teachers in the building. Maybe it is through pure luck that there has not been a bad experience at this school this year.
