Dolphins defeat Bentley, can clinch NE-10 title with one more win

The Le Moyne College men’s lacrosse team has defeated the Bentley Falcons. What’s next for them? The NE-10 Conference regular season title, if Adelphi loses one of its two remaining regular season games, and/or if Le Moyne beats Southern New Hampshire on the road next Saturday April 3, 2011.

Le Moyne hosted Bentley on senior day April 23, 2011 at The Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex surrounded by faithful Dolphins fans. Much to their delight, Le Moyne gets on the board with two goals in the opening three minutes of play. Senior midfielder Matt Chadderon (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and senior attackman Jack Venditti (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) came out with the explosive offense, putting Le Moyne up 2-0 (http://www.lemoynedolphins.com/sports/mlax/2010-11/releases/20110423_mla…).

However, Bentley retaliated with a goal by junior Brendan Grant to end the first quarter. Then, senior midfielder for Bentley Matt Boilard evens up the score at 2-2 with 1:40 into the second quarter, assisted by junior attackman J.D Ayer (http://bentleyfalcons.com/sports/mlax/2010-11/releases/20110423vw43yu).

Of course, the Dolphins would hear none of it, and went on a 4-0 run in a nine minute span to put Le Moyne up 6-2. Dolphin senior Nick DiSarro ( Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) along with Venditti, ran circles around the Falcons defense. Venditti comes up with the behind-the-back goal off a pass by senior attackman Jack Harmatuk (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy/Syracuse U.) Then Venditti assists Harmatuk , giving Jack Harmatuk his 43rd straight goal in a game. Redshirt junior midfielder Tyler Sennet (Syracuse,NY/Nottingham) would cap the Le Moyne run with 2:14 remaining in the first half. Bentley however, would not go quietly into the locker room as Falcon sophomore midfielder Steve Caditz tallies his 5th goal of the year before the break to make it 6-3, Le Moyne.

After a slow start to the third quarter, senior attackman Vinnie Alexander (Syracuse, NY/Westhill/Onondaga C.C.) gets on the board for Le Moyne with two quick goals, one of which assisted by senior face-off specialist/defensive midfielder Cory Bulken (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), to give the ‘Phins a comfortable 8-3 lead (http://www.lemoynedolphins.com/sports/mlax/2010-11/releases/20110423_mlaxBentley).

Bentley, showing some moxie toward the end of the third quarter, would go on a 3-0 run in a span of 74 seconds, capped by senior Jared Kinch to pull Bentley within two of Le Moyne, the score now 8-6. Again, the Dolphins mustered up some strength and answered back with goals from senior attackman Venditti and senior Vinnie Alexander to put the Dolphins back up 10-6. The Dolphins put a stronghold on the goal in the remaining minutes of the fourth quarter, not allowing another Bentley goal in the matchup with sophomore goalkeeper Jeff White (Buffalo, NY/Canisius H.S.) coming up with five saves for Le Moyne in the 49 minutes and 50 seconds of play.

In the matchup, Le Moyne senior Cory Bulken wins 16-of-21 battles at the face-off “X”, and registers his 222nd ground ball with 10 in the game, moving Bulken into second place in the program’s all-charts, surpassing Paul Isgar ’03 (http://www.lemoynedolphins.com/sports/mlax/2010-11/releases/20110423_mla…)

Le Moyne proudly boasts an 11-1 overall, NE-10 9-0 record as they advance into 1st place in the USILA poll with two wins over nationally ranked teams. Limestone, in Le Moyne’s rear view as they drop to 4th place previously ranked #1t (http://www.lemoynedolphins.com/sports/mlax/2010-11/releases/USILAPoll).

Le Moyne, coming off its 44th consecutive NE-10 victory, closes their regular season on the road at Southern New Hampshire on Saturday April 30, 2011 at 4:00pm.
