Green Living is living a healthy life style and is about the environment we live in, the organic, sustainable food we eat and the dietary regimen we follow. It is a full circle way of life.
We saw some intriguing news in the newsletter from Vital Choice Wild Seafood & Organics, about possible heart-health differences between krill oil and fish oil.

Growing evidence suggests that the rare form of omega-3s in krill oil may offer a heart-health advantage over fish oil.
Following a recent human trial in which krill oil bested fish oil on key heart-health risk measures – an animal study suggests that krill oil cuts blood cholesterol and improves liver triglyceride (fat) levels more than fish oil.
As the authors wrote, “We believe that the present investigation opens up new possibilities regarding the use of dietary krill oil as a preventive factor for dyslipidemia [unhealthy fat/cholesterol profiles].” (Ferramosca A et al. 2011).
In a six-week study, scientists at Italy’s University of Salento fed rats diets supplemented with either krill oil or fish oil.
The results showed two substantial advantages for krill oil:
Krill Oil Group – Blood cholesterol dropped 33%; liver triglycerides dropped 20%.
Fish Oil Group – Blood cholesterol dropped 21%; liver triglycerides dropped 10%.
The superior effects of krill oil were attributed to more efficient reduction in “lipogenesis” (fat/cholesterol creation).

After reading this research we reached out to our San Francisco Bay Area medical expert Joseph Habis, Medical Director and Co-founder of Prima Medical Group and this is what he has to say:” There is no dispute that the cardiac benefits of fish oils are significant. As we explore other forms of omega-3s, such as the unique form found in Krill oil, it is possible that even greater benefits will be determined. The need for a larger, randomized study to look at the advantages of krill oil are necessary, but the prospect is very exciting”.
