The word detour typically conjures up feelings of inconvenience and wasted time. Very seldom do you find yourself saying, “a detour, fabulous!” But detours can be fun, and enlightening. For those who travel I-35 north to Duluth and back at 70 miles an hour with blinders on, this is for you!
Detour 1: South Superior, Wisconsin
Hop over either bridge in Duluth to Superior, Wisconsin and head south on Tower Avenue. South Superior starts after the Head of the Lakes Fairgrounds. This is a place that isn’t found in travel guides as there are no museums, no famous landmarks, historical sites, or famous people (though some infamous). What it does have are those hidden gems present in many small town neighborhoods, unique to the world, and definitely worth the change in routine. Let’s get started on Detour 1:
Located at 6301 Tower Avenue, this is a must stop. Walking in the door is a treat in itself where you will be greeted by a smoky aroma second to none. Grab a cart, you will need it. Behold the beef jerky, with flavors not found anywhere else. Mild and hot, sweet and salty – grab a pound or ten for the trip home. The Colorado is especially good! Next check out the homemade beef sticks, especially the Bacon Cheddar. Unbelievable. Ask for a sample. As you work your way down, there is an array of brats and sausages that will leave you standing in awe, and indeciseveness will take hold. Just grab a variety and make plans to return, after all you have to leave room for the double smoked bacon offered in either thick or thin. This is the real deal in bacon folks, unbelieveable! On the the chicken stuffed with stuffing and other stuff – the stuff dreams are made of! Round the corner into the next meat case and now it’s getting serious. There are ribs, chops, roasts, giant stuffed mushrooms, charburgers and kabobs. If it isn’t marinated, the friendly staff will marinate it for you. They will tell you how to cook it and answer any questions you might have. They’re always busy in the back and it’s fun to watch them work, particularly when they’re stuffing brats!
Twig Bakery items are available and be sure to check out the variety of cheeses in the dairy case – Chicken Soup flavor being a favorite!
Years ago this was just a small town grocery store. Now it is a bustling meat market, second to none. Visit them at http://www.superior-meats.com/, then make room in your freezer and visit in person.
If you’re heading back to the cities, take a right out of the parking lot and head south on Wisconsin State 35. This is the peaceful route, and is quite beautiful especially as you pass through Pattison State Park 13 miles south of Superior. There are many options for getting back to Minnesota’s I-35 but the easiest and probably most familiar will be to head west in Danbury, Wisconsin toward Hinkley where you can hook back up with the old familiar.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of the Detour Series!
