Remember back during PaleyFest when Dan Harmon teased a Community episode made up almost entirely of flashbacks, some from episodes we had never before seen? We bet you thought he was being glib or making a joke, right? Well, we sure did. But we were wrong. Tonight’s “Paradigms of Human Memory” episode shows off never before seen footage, such as an off-campus outing to a ghost town as well as footage from the week the study group had to fill in for the glee club and of course introduces us to our new favorite game: Which of these lines are Donald Glover adlibs? And it all starts with some naked Chang (Ken Jeong)!
When the study group is tasked with making their twentieth diorama for anthropology class– a diorama of them making their nineteenth diorama; how’s that for meta!?– they encounter a familiar faces. Annie’s Boobs is back and steals one more item before a naked Chang (we assume he’s naked because his clothes would be too bulky to fit in the vents?) chases him and uncovers his hiding place. Removing all of the loot the monkey stole provides for the perfect trip down memory lane as they find all of Annie (Alison Brie)’s purple pens, a tiny trophy, a Sheriff’s badge, and oh so much more.
Secrets will be uncovered, namely about secret hook-ups within the group, and we even get a little live action look at what Christmas was like when Abed (Danny Pudi) thought everyone was in claymation heading down Gumdrop Lane on an adventure but really they were all back in the study room, sitting around the same old table and texting each other. Turns out it wasn’t just Abed who was having secret adventures all season: Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) may have been involved in a cosmetics pyramid scheme; Jeff (Joel McHale) and Troy (Glover) took a hair styling class; and Annie romanticized…well, a whole damn lot of nothing.
Oh, what was that about secret hook-ups? Well, we won’t say who, though we bet you can guess! What we will say, though, is that once the group finds out, they begin to understand why the year has been so crappy for them as a whole: because of the sabotage from the inside, of course!
But what the gang remembers as crappy memories in this clip show episode are certainly anything but for the audience! “Paradigms of Human Memory” is one of those episodes that is ripe with Easter eggs and tons of visual gags. You will certainly want to keep your eyes on the screen at all time, so you make sure you don’t miss any of the Dean (Jim Rash)’s costumes, especially!
And which of the following lines do you think were Glover adlibs? Tune in to see the delivery and weigh in in the comments below! Our best guesses are on these two: “It’s like a reverse cow birth” and “That guy was hardcore racist, like 1800s Disney style.”
Community airs on NBC, Thursday nights at 8pm.
