On Wednesday, March 16, when I returned to my car after grocery shopping, I found a small piece of paper rolled and slipping to the car’s door handle. When I unrolled the paper, I found a Christian tract proclaiming, “God Loves You.”
Since I did not agree with the title of the tract, I read all of it and will give you a short summary. You can read the whole tract and dozens of others here.
The first paragraph of the tract makes its position clear: “If the reader is not born again, they will burn forever.” It makes me wonder why they say God loves me, but will make me suffer for eternity if I make the wrong choice?
The second and third paragraphs discuss why there is sin in the world: “It’s Adam’s fault.” He was told not to eat and he ate. For this, every person born after Adam and Eve is condemned.
As a side note, God’s words to Adam were, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” (Genesis 2:16-17 NIV) However, Adam did not die but lived several hundred years after eating the fruit. Was Adam to believe God after God did not keep his word from the start? A deeper question is why did God put that cursed tree in the garden? Was God tempting Adam? God can see the future and knew that Adam would eat the fruit? Did God do anything to stop Adam except warn him? God knew and did nothing and for this He punishes all of us? Was this His intent – to have an excuse for inflicting pain and suffering on His creation?
The remainder of the tract brings Jesus onto the stage. I have difficulty understanding the whole Jesus process, but here goes.
God created everything 6000 years ago. God tempted Adam and Adam sinned, therefore all humans are condemned. God, who is all-powerful and can do anything, can’t just forgive all humans. Instead, He demands a blood sacrifice and so, 4000 years later, God becomes the human Jesus who is also His son, and who will be crucified to satisfy God’s bloodlust. Because God in the form of Jesus died, at least for three days, all humans have had their sins forgiven, but only if each human agrees to believe in God and Jesus and what Jesus did.
For the past 2000 years, the Jesus fanatics have been spreading what they call the truth and have converted about 25% of the humans on the planet to Jesus worship in hundreds of different forms.
Back to the title and my disagreement. The title says, “God Loves You.” If that is the case, why is there so much pain and suffering in the world? Not just human suffering, but also animal suffering. One Christian apologist once said that God was like a good father who knew that children must know what suffering is so they can appreciate what heaven will be like.
What father allows some of his children to torture, maim, rape, deprive and kill some of his other children? What lesson is being learned by a month old baby starving to death because his mother was killed? What is this kind father teaching his children by allowing some of his children to be infected with a parasitic worm that causes blindness? What is the educational outcome for malaria, dysentery, yellow fever, cholera, or plague? Where on God’s blackboard has He written what we are to learn from earthquakes, tsunamis, and devastating storms?
The God of the Hebrew Testament is a God of vengeance and murder. Jesus is a nicer guy, but the cult followers in Roman times had learned quite a bit about public relations compared to the authors of the Pentateuch. It was fine if Jesus mentioned that the end times were near even though they weren’t. His zealous followers like Paul played up the compassionate miracles, the forgiveness, and the other positives, like eating pork and not having to get the tip of your penis cut off.
The people who write these tracts like the one I received have a single goal in mind – to put their words about Jesus in front of as many people as possible. Perhaps, God and Jesus should suggest doing something with the billions of humans who have not heard about Jesus and are still worshipping thunder and lightning. Unfortunately, those unbelievers live a long distance away. It is much easier to poke a few paper rolls into car door handles in Sioux Falls, go home to a hot meal and rest content, believing you have changed the world.
