The crown princess of triathlon set the Ironman course world record this past weekend at the Spec Savers Ironman South Africa. Is anybody else not surprised?
Chrissie Wellington is now a three time Ironman World Champion who had been made famous by her smile, tenacity, and sheer speed. None of the women can hate her for beating them six ways from Sunday because, well, she’s just so nice and smiley.
She wasn’t playing friendly in South Africa though.
She made mincemeat out of the field – men and women alike – on her way to glory of a different kind. Her pace times say it all:
Swim – 51:40:00
Bike – 4:45:23
Run – 2:52:54
Wow. Her total finish time was 8:33:56.
A blazing quick swim, a brilliant bike split, and an absolutely on-fire marathon under the three hour holy grail. She exited the swim with 2:45 to make up on fishlike Amanda Stevens and did her usual magic on her Cannondale bike. By the time she crossed the finish tape, she’d created a massive 16:50 lead over the next woman.
Next in line were Rachel Joyce (9:08:23), Diane Riesler (9:20:37), and Sylvia Felt (9:24:31).
Is anybody else excited to see what she can do at Kona? I’m secretly hoping that a dark horse (Mirinda Carfrae, if you could call her a “dark horse”) shows up to give her a fight.
