The frontal boundary that crossed the region over the weekend and stalled to our south will begin its northward return to our region as a warm front through the day today. As it does so, several ripples of low pressure will form along it through Tuesday morning. This will keep a high likelihood of showers and isolated thunderstorms in the forecast across the region through that time.
The frontal system finally lifts north of the region during the day on Tuesday. However, the main cold front lags behind over the Ohio Valley and into the southern Plains due once again to several low pressure ripples forming along the boundary thus delaying its overall forward progress. The end result for our region will be a little taste of late spring weather as both temperatures and dewpoints rise to above normal levels, thus making for warm and somewhat more humid conditions for the bulk of the work week. The atmosphere will also become increasingly more unstable and prone to the production of afternoon and overnight showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms may become strong to locally severe, especially on Wednesday afternoon and evening as the long awaited cold front finally begins to accelerate eastward toward the immediate Capital Region.
The cold front looks to pass through the region during the day on Thursday. This should allow for a return to more seasonable temperatures, and decreasing threats for precipitation, as we head into the close of the work week and the coming weekend.
