The Black Keys is an American blues-rock musical duo consisting of vocalist-guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer-producer Patrick Carney. They formed the duo in Akron, Ohio in 2001, releasing their debut album called “The Big Come Up” in 2002, which was recorded in the basement of Patrick’s home on an 8-track tape recorder from the early 1980s. A year later they released their next album called “Thickfreakness,” which was favored by critics and again recorded in Patrick’s basement in 14 hours.
The duo followed with another album in 2004, this one called “Rubber Factory”. It was around this time that the band stared to gain recognition and popularity. Several singles from this album were used in box offices films such as “When the Lights Go Out,” which was used in Black Snake Moan while “10 A.M. Automatic” was used in Live Free or Die Hard and “Grown So Ugly” was featured in Cloverfield. They also opened for bands such as Pearl Jam, Beck and Radiohead.
They then released an EP entitled “Chulahoma: The Songs of Junior Kimbrough” in 2006 and soon after, their fourth studio album called “Magic Potion” was released, featuring the single “Your Touch,” which was used in the 2009 film Zombieland and the HBO series Eastbound & Down.
The duo didn’t release their next album called “Attack & Release” until 2008 where it debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200 charts. One of the he singles from this album – “I Got Mine” – was used as the theme song for Canadian series The Bridge and was named the 23rd best song by Rolling Stone magazine in its list of the 100 Best Songs of 2008. Meanwhile, the single “So He Won’t Break” was featured on an episode of One Tree Hill.
In 2009, both members of the duo released their own material with Auerbach releasing his debut album called “Keep It Hid” and Carney forming an indie band called Drummer with their debut album being called “Feel Good Together.”
They reunited in 2010 to release their current album “Brothers” that includes today’s Song of the Day “Tighten Up,” which has become their most successful single to date, reaching the top spot on the US alternative charts and earning them Grammy Awards for 2011 for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for the single “Tighten Up” and Best Alternative Music Alubm for “Brothers“. This album was placed at number on the best albums of 2010 by Rolling Stone magazine and Spin magazine named them the Artist of the Year for 2010. And, they their song “Chop and Change” was featured on the soundtrack of box office film The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Since the fall of last year The Black Keys have sold over 1.7 million records.
