California Baptist won the 2011 National Collegiate Wrestling Association team title Saturday in Macon, Ga., with two individual champs out of four finalists.
The Lancers — in their first year as a NCWA member — won the national championship with 156.5 points, and two titlewinners: Chris Santana at 157 pounds, and Caleb Gerl at 197.
Placing second in the team race was Grand Valley State, with 121 points, and one champ, Corey Melinn at heavyweight. Defending NCWA team champ University of Central Florida placed third with 99.5 points, with Joshua Woods winning the 235-pound crown for UCF. Just a half-point behind UCF was Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, in fourth place with 99 points. Mike Dace won the 174-pound title for the SIU-E Cougars.
Other programs with individual champs include Mott Community College, U.S. Naval Academy Prep, Marion Military Institute, Douglas College, and West Chester (with two titlewinners),
According to their official website, the NCWA acts as the governing body for non-NCAA collegiate wrestling teams.
