Do you remember the last fabulous party you and your friends attended? I am not talking about a mediocre, “must attend” social gathering where you wore the same black cocktail dress, sipped on the same old martinis and pretended to really enjoy the crab dip. I am talking about the party where you kicked off your heels, let your hair down and got down on the dance floor. It’s the party you and your friends still refer to as the “best night ever,” while you laugh and recall having one too many mojitos and busting several moves on the dance floor (that may or may not have resulted in a minor dance-induced injury). Every once in a while, these great parties occur and remind us just how fun celebrating milestones, holidays and accomplishments can be. The question is, when and where is the next happening party taking place?
Go grab your dancing shoes and your friends, because the hottest party of the year is about to happen. The best part? You decide where it will be! Your house, a sports complex, community common area or anywhere you want. Yes, it is legal and no, your neighbors will not be mad (just be sure to invite them). An Annapolis-based business called Tiki To You is the ultimate party on wheels. You pick the party date and call Julie Birney, the owner and creator of the mobile bar concept, who handles every detail associated with drinks, bartenders and music. Once the date has been confirmed, Julie helps creates a custom drink menu that includes everything from mojtos and margaritas to strawberry daquiris, wine and draft beer. (In case you were wondering, yes the tiki bar has a draft beer system). The day of the event, the bar and Tiki To You staff pull in, open up the bar and are ready to pour drinks in less than an hour. They even bring the music in the form of customized iPod playlists. “The most popular mixes include Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffett and Jack Johnson, but we get a lot of requests for classic rock, country and today’s hits as well,” says Julie.
When asked how she came up with the concept, Julie’s face lights up. “I woke up in the middle of the night and thought, why not design a custom tiki bar on wheels? Before I knew it, I was ordering thatch roofing, designing the drop down bars and installing the sound system. Once the bar was complete, I knew we had made something really special,” says Julie. And who better to design a state-of-the-art bar than one of the most popular bartenders in Annapolis? It is no surprise that Julie Birney’s name is infamous in the city of Annapolis. After spending a couple minutes with her, you cannot help but smile and enjoy the bubbly conversation. Her enthusiasm is contagious and her sense of humor, delightful. She explains after building the first tiki bar over a decade ago, a second one was built just to keep up with the busy times. “We realized it was time to build a second bar, when we had to turn down parties and events, especially in the summer time,” she explains.
The fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day are the busiest times for Tiki To You. The bars generally provide services for any type of event, from tailgating and weddings, to birthday parties and charity events. This year, the first party of the season kicked off in early April, signaling the start to a busy summer season. Julie’s hope is to work with more sports fans in the future, who could use the tiki bar for tailgating and sports parties.
In addition to being able to say you hosted the “best party ever,” wouldn’t it be great to just walk back into your house and go to bed after the party is done? No cleanup, no catching a cab or trying to find your friends who have wandered off to grab a slice of late night pizza. Now, that would be a party to talk about for you years to come.
