Body found in shallow grave confirmed to be missing Nev. teen, Micaela Costanzo
WEST WENDOVER, Nev. — A Nevada police chief said Sunday evening that the remains found in a shallow grave in the desert near the Utah border have been confirmed to be those of missing Nevada teen Micaela “Mickey” Costanzo.
Mickey went missing after leaving her high school. According to ABC 4 News the last time she was seen alive was on surveillance video at 5:15 p.m. Thursday leaving school.
On Sunday evening Washoe County Sheriff’s forensic unit and the West Wendover Police Department processed the scene of the grave.
Police announced in a press conference Sunday that they are searching for Mickey’s killer. At this point they have no suspects.
Anyone with any information regarding this case is asked to call West Wendover Police Department at 775-664-2930.
On Saturday more than 100 volunteers gathered to search for Costanzo when a searcher discovered the freshly dug grave about five miles out of town. Authorities set up tens and worked at the site on Sunday, the AP reported.
Elko County Sheriff’s Cpl. Jim Carpenter said local detectives worked on the excavation with invetigators from western Nevada’s Washoe County.
Mickey was last seen leaving her high school Thursday evening. Her friends say she was a good student and that she was well-liked by her classmates.
“She was so sweet, like she would never do anything to anybody,” said Laura Botello, a junior at the school. “Then just out of nowhere she disappears just like that in broad daylight. Nobody saw her?”
Now students and families are scared and nervous, unsure of how this could have happened in their town. School officials opened the high school for staff and students to gather on Saturday, and students created makeshift memorials with flowers and candles.
“It’s very solemn,” said high school counselor Anne Crawford. “There’s lots of tears and there’s a lot of people very scared or nervous.”
Officials say the body is now being sent to Reno where an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
A candlelight vigil will be held for Micaela on Monday, March 7th, at 6 p.m. at West Wendover High School. A Facebook page “Candlelight Vigil for Micaela ‘Mickey’ Costanzo” has been set up with details and for people to sign up to attend.
